Grade 2 add subtract 1000 test answers: worked solutions
Question 1 – Ten and one hundred [2 pts]
- 315 and 415 (the hundreds digit goes up by 1 each time).
- \(673 – 10 = 663\)
Scoring: 1 point for both missing numbers, 1 point for 663.
Question 2 – Add with blocks [2 pts]
Ones: \(5 + 8 = 13\). Regroup 10 ones as 1 ten, and keep 3 ones.
Tens: \(3 + 4 + 1 = 8\).
Hundreds: \(2 + 1 = 3\).
So \(235 + 148 = 383\).
Scoring: 1 point for adding with correct regrouping, 1 point for 383.
Question 3 – Add three-digit numbers [3 pts]
- \(162 + 327 = 489\)
- Ones \(4 + 9 = 13\), tens \(5 + 8 + 1 = 14\), hundreds \(2 + 3 + 1 = 6\): 643
- Ones \(8 + 6 = 14\), tens \(7 + 5 + 1 = 13\), hundreds \(4 + 2 + 1 = 7\): 734
Scoring: 1 point for each correct sum.
Question 4 – Subtract three-digit numbers [3 pts]
- \(857 – 423 = 434\)
- Trade a ten and a hundred: 5 hundreds, 12 tens, 12 ones. \(12 – 5 = 7\), \(12 – 7 = 5\), \(5 – 2 = 3\): 357
- Trade a hundred for 10 tens, then a ten for 10 ones: 7 hundreds, 9 tens, 10 ones. \(10 – 4 = 6\), \(9 – 6 = 3\), \(7 – 3 = 4\): 436
Scoring: 1 point for each correct difference.
Question 5 – Missing part [2 pts]
\(650 – 387\): 650 is 6 hundreds, 5 tens, 0 ones. Trade a ten: 6 hundreds, 4 tens, 10 ones. Trade a hundred: 5 hundreds, 14 tens, 10 ones. \(10 – 7 = 3\), \(14 – 8 = 6\), \(5 – 3 = 2\).
The missing part is \(263\).
Scoring: 1 point for 650 – 387, 1 point for 263.
Question 6 – Check Maya's answer [2 pts]
Check: \(265 + 268 = 533\), which is not 523. Maya is not correct.
523 is 4 hundreds, 12 tens, 13 ones. \(13 – 8 = 5\), \(12 – 6 = 6\), \(4 – 2 = 2\). The correct difference is \(255\).
Scoring: 1 point for the addition check, 1 point for 255.
Question 7 – Food drive [2 pts]
\(365 + 289\): ones \(5 + 9 = 14\), tens \(6 + 8 + 1 = 15\), hundreds \(3 + 2 + 1 = 6\).
The school collected 654 cans.
Scoring: 1 point for the correct addition, 1 point for 654 cans.
Question 8 – Stamp collection [2 pts]
\(740 – 285\) \(= 455\) (trade a ten and a hundred: 6 hundreds, 13 tens, 10 ones).
\(455 + 100 = 555\).
Jamal has 555 stamps.
Scoring: 1 point for 455, 1 point for 555.
Question 9 – Explain the digit [2 pts]
Yes, Diego is correct. Adding 10 is one more ten, so the tens digit goes from 5 to 6. Adding 100 is one more hundred, so the hundreds digit goes from 4 to 5.
Scoring: 1 point for saying he is correct, 1 point for naming the tens digit and the hundreds digit.
Total score
20 points
