5th Grade Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators Worksheet (PDF)

These 20 problems practice adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators, as listed in standards 5.NF.A.1 and 5.NF.A.2. Early problems use bars and number lines. Later problems ask for regrouping and for estimates with benchmark fractions.
The last six problems are word problems about pizza, hiking, ribbon, baking, practice time, and apples. Simplify each answer and write improper fractions as mixed numbers.
Grade 5 · Common Core State Standards: 5.NF.A.1, 5.NF.A.2
Exercise 1 – Halves and fourths
Find \(\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{4}\).
Exercise 2 – Thirds and sixths
Use the bars to add \(\frac{1}{3} + \frac{1}{6}\).
Exercise 3 – Fifths and halves
Find \(\frac{2}{5} + \frac{1}{2}\).
Exercise 4 – Fourths minus thirds
Find \(\frac{3}{4} – \frac{1}{3}\). The number line starts at the first fraction.
Exercise 5 – Sixths minus fourths
Find \(\frac{5}{6} – \frac{1}{4}\).
Exercise 6 – Sum greater than 1
Find \(\frac{2}{3} + \frac{3}{4}\).
Exercise 7 – Eighths minus sixths
Find \(\frac{7}{8} – \frac{1}{6}\).
Exercise 8 – Tenths and fifteenths
Find \(\frac{3}{10} + \frac{4}{15}\).
Exercise 9 – Add mixed numbers
Find \(1\frac{1}{2} + 2\frac{1}{3}\).
Exercise 10 – Regroup the fraction sum
Find \(2\frac{3}{4} + 1\frac{5}{6}\).
Exercise 11 – Subtract with regrouping
Find \(4\frac{1}{3} – 1\frac{1}{2}\).
Exercise 12 – Harder regrouping
Find \(5\frac{1}{4} – 2\frac{2}{3}\).
Exercise 13 – Estimate, then add
First estimate \(\frac{5}{6} + \frac{3}{5}\) using the benchmarks 0, \(\frac{1}{2}\), and 1. Then find the exact sum.
Exercise 14 – Missing number
Find the missing number: \(? + \frac{2}{5} = \frac{7}{10}\).
Exercise 15 – Pizza for two meals
Maya ate \(\frac{1}{4}\) of a pizza at lunch and \(\frac{3}{8}\) of the same pizza at dinner. What fraction of the pizza did she eat in all?
Exercise 16 – Weekend hike
Jamal hiked \(2\frac{1}{2}\) miles on Saturday and \(1\frac{3}{4}\) miles on Sunday. How many miles did he hike in all?
Exercise 17 – Ribbon left over
Sofia has \(3\frac{2}{3}\) yards of ribbon. She uses \(1\frac{3}{4}\) yards for a gift. How much ribbon is left?
Exercise 18 – Will it fit?
Ethan puts \(\frac{2}{3}\) cup of flour and \(\frac{3}{4}\) cup of sugar into a bowl that holds 2 cups. Does everything fit? How much room is left?
Exercise 19 – Practice time
Priya’s Little League team practiced \(1\frac{1}{2}\) hours on Monday, \(\frac{3}{4}\) hour on Tuesday, and \(2\frac{1}{3}\) hours on Thursday. Find the total practice time. How much more than 4 hours is that?
Exercise 20 – Apple pie and sauce
Diego has \(5\frac{1}{2}\) pounds of apples. He uses \(2\frac{1}{4}\) pounds for a pie and \(1\frac{5}{6}\) pounds for applesauce. How many pounds of apples are left?
