Grade 6 · Common Core State Standards: 6.RP.A.2, 6.RP.A.3b

Grade 6 unit rates answers: exercises 1 to 10

Exercise 1 – Unit price of notebooks

Divide the total cost by the number of notebooks.

\(\$9.00 \div 6 = \$1.50\)

$1.50 per notebook

NotebooksCost6$91$1.50
Dividing both numbers by 6 gives the unit price.

Exercise 2 – Reading pace

Pages per hour: \(96 \div 4 = 24\).

Hours per page: \(4 \div 96 = \frac{1}{24}\).

24 pages per hour; \(\frac{1}{24}\) hour per page

Exercise 3 – Typing speed

\(210 \div 7 = 30\)

30 words per minute

Exercise 4 – Price per ounce

\(\$2.40 \div 8 = \$0.30\)

$0.30 per ounce

Exercise 5 – Walking rate

Divide distance by time: \(\frac{3}{4} \div \frac{1}{4}\).

\(\frac{3}{4} \times 4 = 3\)

3 miles per hour

Exercise 6 – Rate language

\(15 \div 6 = 2.5\)

It means the hose fills 2.5 gallons per minute, or 2.5 gallons for each minute.

2.5 gallons per minute

Exercise 7 – Cost of 7 items

Multiply the unit price by the number of bars.

\(\$2.25 \times 7 = \$15.75\)

$15.75

Exercise 8 – Distance at constant speed

\(55 \times 4 = 220\)

220 miles

HoursMiles1554220
Multiplying both numbers by 4.

Exercise 9 – Better buy: cereal

Small: \(\$3.60 \div 12 = \$0.30\) per ounce.

Large: \(\$5.04 \div 18 = \$0.28\) per ounce.

$0.28 is less than $0.30.

The large box is the better buy.

Exercise 10 – Heartbeat

Per second: \(36 \div 30 = 1.2\).

Per minute: \(1.2 \times 60 = 72\).

1.2 beats per second, 72 beats per minute

Exercises 11 and up

Exercise 11 – Hourly pay

\(\$63.00 \div 4.5 = \$14.00\)

$14.00 per hour

Exercise 12 – Pages per day

Unit rate: \(84 \div 6 = 14\) pages per day.

\(14 \times 15 = 210\)

210 pages

Exercise 13 – Gas mileage

\(288 \div 12 = 24\) miles per gallon.

\(24 \times 15 = 360\)

24 miles per gallon; 360 miles

GallonsMiles1241228815360
The van goes 24 miles on each gallon.

Exercise 14 – Unit rate from a table

\(\$30.00 \div 2 = \$15.00\). Check: \(\$60.00 \div 4 = \$15.00\) and \(\$90.00 \div 6 = \$15.00\).

$15.00 per hour

Exercise 15 – Better buy: apples

5 pounds: \(\$8.75 \div 5 = \$1.75\) per pound.

8 pounds: \(\$13.20 \div 8 = \$1.65\) per pound.

$1.65 is less than $1.75.

The 8-pound bag is the better buy.

Exercise 16 – Who runs faster?

Aisha: \(27 \div 3 = 9\) minutes per mile.

Liam: \(40 \div 5 = 8\) minutes per mile.

Fewer minutes per mile means a faster pace.

Liam runs faster (8 minutes per mile).

Exercise 17 – Apples and change

Price per pound: \(\$7.50 \div 5 = \$1.50\).

Cost of 8 pounds: \(\$1.50 \times 8 = \$12.00\).

Change: \(\$20.00 – \$12.00 = \$8.00\).

$8.00

Exercise 18 – Road trip speeds

First part: \(156 \div 3 = 52\) miles per hour.

Second part: \(224 \div 4 = 56\) miles per hour.

In 5 hours at 52 miles per hour: \(52 \times 5 = 260\) miles.

52 mph, 56 mph, 260 miles

Exercise 19 – Dripping faucet

\(\frac{3}{4} \div 6 = \frac{3}{4} \times \frac{1}{6} = \frac{1}{8}\)

\(\frac{1}{8} \times 24 = 3\)

\frac{1}{8} gallon per hour; 3 gallons in 24 hours

Exercise 20 – Reading rate

Chapters per hour: \(\frac{2}{3} \div \frac{1}{2} = \frac{2}{3} \times 2 = \frac{4}{3}\).

Hours per chapter: \(\frac{1}{2} \div \frac{2}{3} = \frac{1}{2} \times \frac{3}{2} = \frac{3}{4}\).

1\frac{1}{3} chapters per hour; \frac{3}{4} hour per chapter
