Grade 1 · Common Core State Standards: 1.NBT.B.3
Comparing numbers answers: exercises 1 to 10
Exercise 1 – Which group has more?
20 is 2 tens and 30 is 3 tens. 2 tens is less than 3 tens.
\(20 < 30\)
Exercise 2 – Tens decide
41 has 4 tens. 36 has 3 tens. 4 tens is more than 3 tens.
\(41 > 36\)
Exercise 3 – Compare 45 and 54
Tens: 4 and 5. The tens are different, so the bigger tens digit wins.
\(45 < 54\)
Exercise 4 – Same number
Tens: 6 and 6. Ones: 7 and 7. Both digits match, so the numbers are equal.
\(67 = 67\)
Exercise 5 – Switch the digits
Tens: 8 and 2. The tens are different, so the bigger tens digit wins.
\(82 > 28\)
Exercise 6 – Big ones, small tens
Tens: 3 and 4. The tens are different, so the bigger tens digit wins.
\(39 < 41\)
Exercise 7 – Zero ones
Tens: 9 and 1. The tens are different, so the bigger tens digit wins.
\(90 > 19\)
Exercise 8 – Same tens
Tens: 5 and 5. The tens match, so compare the ones. Ones: 3 and 8.
\(53 < 58\)
Exercise 9 – Circle the greater
Tens: 7 and 6. 7 is more than 6. 76 is greater (\(76 > 67\)).
Exercise 10 – Circle the lesser
Tens: 3 and 4. 3 is less than 4. 34 is lesser (\(34 < 43\)).
Exercises 11 and up
Exercise 11 – Number line
47 is to the right of 43, so 47 is greater.
\(43 < 47\) (or \(47 > 43\))
Exercise 12 – Missing digit
Both numbers have 7 tens. The ones in the first number must be less than 2. The digit can be 0 or 1 (70 and 71 work).
Exercise 13 – Order three numbers
Tens: 5, 8, 4. Least is 49, then 58, then 85. 49, 58, 85
Exercise 14 – Order from greatest
31 and 37 both have 3 tens, and 37 has more ones. 13 has only 1 ten. 37, 31, 13
Exercise 15 – Compare the ones
Ones: 2 and 8. 8 is more than 2. 68 has more ones, so \(62 < 68\).
Exercise 16 – True or false (a)
71 has 7 tens and 69 has 6 tens. 7 tens is more than 6 tens. True.
Exercise 17 – True or false (b)
45 has 4 tens and 38 has 3 tens, so 45 is greater than 38. False. The true sentence is \(45 > 38\).
Exercise 18 – Sticker books
63 has 6 tens. 36 has 3 tens. 6 tens is more than 3 tens.
Maya has more. \(63 > 36\)
Exercise 19 – Little League tickets
Tens: 4 and 5. 4 is less than 5, so 48 is less than 51. The Hawks sold fewer tickets. \(48 < 51\)
Exercise 20 – Pages read
Both have 2 tens and 9 ones. The numbers are equal. Neither. \(29 = 29\)
Exercise 21 – Jars of beads
Tens: 7, 2, 7. The jar with 2 tens has the fewest: 27. The other two have 7 tens. Their ones are 2 and 0, so 72 is more than 70. Most: 72 beads. Fewest: 27 beads.
Exercise 22 – Tens and ones story
Sofia: 54. Liam: 49. Tens: 5 and 4. 54 and 49, \(54 > 49\)
Exercise 23 – Fix the mistake
Diego looked at the ones first. Always compare the tens first. 19 has 1 ten and 21 has 2 tens. 19 is less than 21: \(19 < 21\)
