Continuity quiz: 10 questions

Question 1
-112345-1123456xy
Graph near x = 2.

What type of discontinuity does the graph have at \(x=2\)?

Question 2
-2-11234-1123456789xy
Graph near x = 1.

What type of discontinuity is at \(x=1\)?

Question 3
-112345-5-4-3-2-112345xy
Graph of 1/(x − 2).

What type of discontinuity does \(f(x)=\frac{1}{x-2}\) have at \(x=2\)?

Question 4
Which is NOT required for \(f\) to be continuous at \(x=a\)?

Question 5
For what value of \(k\) is the function with \(f(x)=x+1\) for \(x < 3\) and \(f(x)=kx-2\) for \(x\ge 3\) continuous?

Question 6
A function is continuous on \([2,5]\) with \(f(2)=-1\) and \(f(5)=6\). For which value of \(k\) does the IVT guarantee \(f(c)=k\)?

Question 7
Which function is continuous at every real number?

Question 8
-2-112-4-3-2-11234xy
Graph of f(x) = x³ − x − 1.

To show \(x^{3}-x-1=0\) has a root in \((1,2)\), which values would you compute?

Question 9
Why does the IVT not apply to \(f(x)=\frac{1}{x}\) on \([-1,1]\)?

Question 10
A step function has left limit \(4\) and right limit \(7\) at \(x=2\). Which statement is true?

Remember

Remember
  • Continuity needs three things: f(a) exists, the limit exists, and they are equal.
  • Removable discontinuities are holes; jump discontinuities have different one-sided limits; infinite discontinuities are vertical asymptotes.
  • To make a piecewise function continuous, set the one-sided limits equal at the boundary.
  • The IVT guarantees a value, but only if the function is continuous on the whole closed interval.

How to use this continuity quiz

Answer each question, read the explanation that appears, and keep track of your score. A score of 8 out of 10 or more means you are ready for the test.
