Integers rationals test answers: worked solutions
Question 1 – Integers in context [2 pts]
(a) \(-300\). (b) \(+15\) (or \(15\)).
Scoring: 1 point for each integer.
Question 2 – Opposites [2 pts]
(a) \(15\). (b) \(-\frac{2}{5}\). (c) The opposite of \(-6\) is \(6\), so \(-(-6) = 6\).
Scoring: 1 point for (a) and (b) together; 1 point for (c).
Question 3 – Name the points [2 pts]
M is \(-4\), N is \(-1\), and P is \(5\).
Scoring: 1 point for two correct; 2 points for all three.
Question 4 – Plot rational numbers [2 pts]
\(-2.5\) is halfway between \(-3\) and \(-2\); \(1\frac{1}{2} = 1.5\).
Scoring: 1 point for each correctly placed point.
Question 5 – Vertical number line [2 pts]
H is \(6^{\circ}\) and K is about \(-3^{\circ}\).
Scoring: 1 point for H; 1 point for K (accept -3 or between -2 and -4).
Question 6 – Meaning of zero [2 pts]
Gain: \(+7\). Loss: \(-4\).
0 yards means no gain or loss.
Scoring: 1 point for the integers; 1 point for the meaning of 0.
Question 7 – Which is farther left [2 pts]
On a number line, numbers farther left are less. \(-9\) is 9 units left of 0 and \(-4\) is 4 units left of 0.
\(-9\) is farther left.
Scoring: 1 point for the answer; 1 point for the explanation.
Question 8 – Opposites on a line [3 pts]
(a) R is \(-5.5\) and S is \(5.5\).
(b) They are opposites, each 5.5 units from 0.
(c) Sample: 5.5 feet below sea level.
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 9 – Debt and savings [3 pts]
Priya: \(-12\). Noah: \(+12\).
They are opposites, 12 units from 0.
Scoring: 1 point for the integers; 1 point for the relationship; 1 point for the plot.
Total score
20 points
Key facts behind this integers rationals test answers
- Positive numbers are above zero or to the right; negative numbers are below zero or to the left.
- Opposites are the same distance from 0 on opposite sides.
- The opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself.
- Integers are whole numbers and their opposites; rational numbers include fractions and decimals.
- A vertical number line, like a thermometer, puts positive numbers on top.
How to use this integers rationals test answers
