Ratio tables test answers: worked solutions

Question 1 – Complete the table [2 pts]

The ratio is \(3:7\). \(3 \times 2 = 6\), so \(7 \times 2 = 14\).

\(21 \div 7 = 3\), so \(3 \times 3 = 9\).

The missing numbers are 14 and 9.

Completed table.

Scoring: 1 point for the table with correct scale factors; 1 point for 14 and 9 correct.

Question 2 – Plot the pairs [2 pts]

Plot \((1, 3)\), \((2, 6)\), \((3, 9)\).

xy12342468100
The three points.

Scoring: 1 point for correct pairs; 1 point for correct plotting.

Question 3 – Read the graph [2 pts]

The pair \((2, 5)\) gives \(5 \div 2 = 2.5\) dollars per hour.

\(2.5 \times 8 = 20\)

He earns $20.00.

Scoring: 1 point for the rate or scale factor; 1 point for $20.

Question 4 – Double number line [2 pts]

Flour 4, 8, 12, 20 corresponds to multipliers 1, 2, 3, 5.

Milk: 3, 6, 9, 15.

Scoring: 1 point for the multipliers; 1 point for all four correct milk amounts.

Question 5 – Spot the error [2 pts]

Equivalent ratios come from multiplying, not adding. \(4 \times 2.5 = 10\), so \(6 \times 2.5 = 15\).

The correct pair is \((10, 15)\).

Scoring: 1 point for explaining that multiplication is needed; 1 point for 15.

Question 6 – Better mix [2 pts]

A: \(30 \div 5 = 6\), cocoa \(2 \times 6 = 12\).

B: \(30 \div 6 = 5\), cocoa \(3 \times 5 = 15\).

Mix B is stronger.

Scoring: 1 point for both tables; 1 point for the conclusion.

Question 7 – Rate from a table [2 pts]

\(18 \div 3 = 6\) pages per day.

\(6 \times 5 = 30\) pages and \(6 \times 9 = 54\) pages.

Scoring: 1 point for the unit rate; 1 point for 30 and 54.

Question 8 – Table and graph [3 pts]

(a) \(\$7.00 \div 2 = \$3.50\).

(b) Plot \((2, 7)\), \((4, 14)\), \((6, 21)\).

(c) \(\$3.50 \times 10 = \$35.00\).

xy123456748121620240
Cost (y) of gallons (x).

Scoring: 1 point for each part.

Question 9 – Compare runners [3 pts]

Mei: \(60 \div 20 = 3\), laps \(12 \times 3 = 36\).

Noah: \(60 \div 30 = 2\), laps \(15 \times 2 = 30\).

36 is greater than 30, so Mei runs more laps.

Scoring: 1 point for each table; 1 point for the conclusion.

Key facts behind this ratio tables test answers

Key facts
  • Each column of a ratio table is an equivalent ratio.
  • Multiply or divide both numbers by the same number; adding does not work.
  • A double number line shows the same ratio on two scales.
  • Plot each pair as (x, y); equivalent ratios lie on a line through the origin.
  • To compare ratios, make one quantity the same in both tables.
