5th Grade Graphing on the Coordinate Plane Test Solutions and Scoring (PDF)
This grade 5 coordinate plane test answers for 5th Grade covers graphing on the coordinate plane (Common Core 5.G.A.1, 5.G.A.2), with a free PDF to print.
Use this key to score the test out of 20 points. Each answer shows the work and a scoring guide. Reversed coordinates cost the point for that ordered pair, but later parts that use them can still earn credit.

Grade 5 coordinate plane test answers: worked solutions
Question 1 – Name the points [3 pts]
- \(P=(1,6)\)
- \(Q=(5,2)\)
- \(R=(7,5)\)
Scoring: 1 point for each correct ordered pair. Subtract the point if the coordinates are reversed.
Question 2 – Complete the rectangle [2 pts]
D has the x-coordinate of A and the y-coordinate of C, so \(D=(2,7)\).
Width: \(6-2=4\). Height: \(7-4=3\). Area: \(4\times3=12\) square units.
Scoring: 1 point for D = (2, 7), 1 point for area 12 square units.
Question 3 – Distances on grid lines [2 pts]
- \(9-0=9\) units
- \(8-2=6\) units
Scoring: 1 point for each distance.
Question 4 – Points on the axes [3 pts]
- \((3,0)\), because its y-coordinate is 0
- \((0,3)\), because its x-coordinate is 0
- \((0,0)\)
Scoring: 1 point per part.
Question 5 – Moves on the grid [2 pts]
Right 5: \((6,1)\). Up 3: \((6,4)\). Left 2: \((4,4)\).
\((4,4)\)
Scoring: 1 point for correct moves, 1 point for the final ordered pair.
Question 6 – Bike ride graph [3 pts]
- After 2 hours Liam has ridden 20 miles.
- 30 miles
- He rides 10 miles each hour, and \(60\div10=6\), so 6 hours.
Scoring: 1 point per part.
Question 7 – Table to ordered pairs [2 pts]
\((1,5), (2,10), (3,15), (4,20)\).
For 6 bags: \(6\times5=30\), so \((6,30)\).
Scoring: 1 point for the four pairs, 1 point for (6, 30).
Question 8 – Walking in town [3 pts]
- \(8-2=6\) blocks
- \(7-3=4\) blocks
- \(6+4=10\) blocks
Scoring: 1 point per part.
Total score
20 points
Key facts behind this grade 5 coordinate plane test answers
- The x-axis is horizontal and the y-axis is vertical; they meet at the origin (0, 0).
- An ordered pair (x, y) gives the move right first, then up.
- (2, 5) and (5, 2) are two different points.
- Points with the same x-coordinate or the same y-coordinate lie on a straight line, so subtract to find the distance.
- Axis labels explain what each coordinate means in a real-world graph.
