Grade 6 coordinate plane test: questions

Question 1 – Name the points [2 pts]

xy−6−5−4−3−2−1123456−6−5−4−3−2−1123456ABCD
Points A, B, C, and D.

Write the ordered pair for each point and name its quadrant.

Question 2 – Plot points [2 pts]

xy−5−4−3−2−112345−5−4−3−2−112345
Coordinate plane.

Plot the points \((-3, 2)\), \((0, -4)\), and \((4, 0)\).

Question 3 – Reflections [2 pts]

  1. Reflect \((5, -3)\) across the x-axis.
  2. Reflect \((-2, -7)\) across the y-axis.

Question 4 – Distance [2 pts]

  1. Find the distance between \((-6, 4)\) and \((-6, -3)\).
  2. Find the distance between \((-5, -2)\) and \((4, -2)\).

Question 5 – Rectangle [2 pts]

A rectangle has vertices \((-5, 2)\), \((3, 2)\), \((3, -1)\), and \((-5, -1)\). Find the perimeter and area.

Question 6 – Missing vertex [2 pts]

Three vertices of a rectangle are \((-3, -2)\), \((-3, 4)\), and \((2, 4)\). Find the fourth vertex.

Question 7 – Triangle area [3 pts]

xy−4−3−2−11234123456
A triangle.

A triangle has vertices (-3, 1), (3, 1), and (3, 5). Find the length of the base, the height, and the area.

Question 8 – Map problem [3 pts]

A map uses a grid where each unit is 1 mile. Town A is at (-4, 2), Town B is at (3, 2), and Town C is at (3, -5). Find the distance from A to B and from B to C. How far is the trip A to B to C?

Question 9 – Reflect a polygon [2 pts]

Rectangle R has vertices \((1, 1)\), \((4, 1)\), \((4, 3)\), and \((1, 3)\). Reflect it across the x-axis, then give the vertices of the new rectangle and name its quadrant.

Key facts behind this grade 6 coordinate plane test

Key facts
  • An ordered pair (x, y) gives the horizontal move first, then the vertical move.
  • The signs of x and y tell the quadrant.
  • Reflecting across the x-axis changes the sign of y; across the y-axis changes the sign of x.
  • Points that share a coordinate are a distance apart equal to the difference or sum of the absolute values.
  • Side lengths of a polygon on the plane give its perimeter and area.

How to use this grade 6 coordinate plane test

Time yourself: the test is designed for an average student in 45 minutes. Answer the questions you are sure of first, then come back to the longer ones and check your units.
