Grade 2 · Common Core State Standards: 2.NBT.B.7, 2.NBT.B.8
Grade 2 add subtract 1000 answers: exercises 1 to 10
Exercise 1 – Ladder of tens
Adding 10 raises the tens digit by 1: 347 has 4 tens, so the next number has 5 tens.
\(347 + 10 = 357\) and \(357 + 10 = 367\).
\(357 and 367\)
Exercise 2 – Subtract 100
Subtracting 100 lowers the hundreds digit by 1: 5 hundreds becomes 4 hundreds. The tens and ones stay the same.
\(584 – 100 = 484\)
Exercise 3 – Add 100
Add 1 to the hundreds digit: 6 hundreds becomes 7 hundreds.
\(629 + 100 = 729\)
Exercise 4 – Subtract 10
405 has 0 tens. Take 1 ten from 40 tens to get 39 tens, so the hundreds digit also changes: 4 hundreds 0 tens becomes 3 hundreds 9 tens.
\(405 – 10 = 395\)
Exercise 5 – Add 10 and cross a hundred
392 has 9 tens. One more ten makes 10 tens, which is 1 hundred. So 3 hundreds 9 tens 2 ones becomes 4 hundreds 0 tens 2 ones.
\(392 + 10 = 402\)
Exercise 6 – Add with blocks
Ones: \(1 + 6 = 7\).
Tens: \(4 + 5 = 9\).
Hundreds: \(2 + 3 = 5\).
So \(241 + 356 = 597\).
\(597\)
Exercise 7 – Regroup the ones
Ones: \(4 + 8 = 12\). Regroup 10 ones as 1 ten, and keep 2 ones.
Tens: \(3 + 5 + 1 = 9\).
Hundreds: \(1 + 1 = 2\).
So \(134 + 158 = 292\).
\(292\)
Exercise 8 – Regroup the tens
Ones: \(2 + 4 = 6\).
Tens: \(7 + 6 = 13\). Regroup 10 tens as 1 hundred, and keep 3 tens.
Hundreds: \(3 + 2 + 1 = 6\).
So \(372 + 264 = 636\).
\(636\)
Exercise 9 – Regroup two times
Ones: \(6 + 5 = 11\). Regroup 10 ones as 1 ten, and keep 1 ones.
Tens: \(7 + 8 + 1 = 16\). Regroup 10 tens as 1 hundred, and keep 6 tens.
Hundreds: \(2 + 3 + 1 = 6\).
So \(276 + 385 = 661\).
\(661\)
Exercise 10 – Subtract each place
Write 748 as 7 hundreds, 4 tens, 8 ones.
Ones: \(8 – 5 = 3\).
Tens: \(4 – 2 = 2\).
Hundreds: \(7 – 3 = 4\).
So \(748 – 325 = 423\).
\(423\)
Exercises 11 and up
Exercise 11 – Trade a ten
Write 536 as 5 hundreds, 3 tens, 6 ones.
Not enough ones. Trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now: 5 hundreds, 2 tens, 16 ones.
Ones: \(16 – 8 = 8\).
Not enough tens. Trade 1 hundred for 10 tens. Now: 4 hundreds, 12 tens, 16 ones.
Tens: \(12 – 7 = 5\).
Hundreds: \(4 – 1 = 3\).
So \(536 – 178 = 358\).
\(358\)
Exercise 12 – Trade a hundred
Write 625 as 6 hundreds, 2 tens, 5 ones.
Ones: \(5 – 2 = 3\).
Not enough tens. Trade 1 hundred for 10 tens. Now: 5 hundreds, 12 tens, 5 ones.
Tens: \(12 – 4 = 8\).
Hundreds: \(5 – 3 = 2\).
So \(625 – 342 = 283\).
\(283\)
Exercise 13 – Zero in the tens place
Write 403 as 4 hundreds, 0 tens, 3 ones.
Not enough ones. Trade 1 hundred for 10 tens. Now: 3 hundreds, 10 tens, 3 ones.
Not enough ones. Trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now: 3 hundreds, 9 tens, 13 ones.
Ones: \(13 – 8 = 5\).
Tens: \(9 – 5 = 4\).
Hundreds: \(3 – 1 = 2\).
So \(403 – 158 = 245\).
\(245\)
Exercise 14 – Missing addend
Subtract the known part from the whole: \(612 – 347\).
Write 612 as 6 hundreds, 1 ten, 2 ones.
Not enough ones. Trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now: 6 hundreds, 0 tens, 12 ones.
Ones: \(12 – 7 = 5\).
Not enough tens. Trade 1 hundred for 10 tens. Now: 5 hundreds, 10 tens, 12 ones.
Tens: \(10 – 4 = 6\).
Hundreds: \(5 – 3 = 2\).
So \(612 – 347 = 265\).
Check: \(347 + 265 = 612\).
\(265\)
Exercise 15 – Check with addition
Write 815 as 8 hundreds, 1 ten, 5 ones.
Not enough ones. Trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now: 8 hundreds, 0 tens, 15 ones.
Ones: \(15 – 7 = 8\).
Not enough tens. Trade 1 hundred for 10 tens. Now: 7 hundreds, 10 tens, 15 ones.
Tens: \(10 – 6 = 4\).
Hundreds: \(7 – 4 = 3\).
So \(815 – 467 = 348\).
Check: \(348 + 467 = 815\). It matches.
\(348\)
Exercise 16 – Find the error
Noah took the smaller digit from the larger digit in each place: \(9 – 4 = 5\), \(7 – 2 = 5\), \(5 – 2 = 3\). But 4 ones cannot be used to take away 9 ones, so he needed to trade.
Write 524 as 5 hundreds, 2 tens, 4 ones.
Not enough ones. Trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now: 5 hundreds, 1 ten, 14 ones.
Ones: \(14 – 9 = 5\).
Not enough tens. Trade 1 hundred for 10 tens. Now: 4 hundreds, 11 tens, 14 ones.
Tens: \(11 – 7 = 4\).
Hundreds: \(4 – 2 = 2\).
So \(524 – 279 = 245\).
Check: \(245 + 279 = 524\).
\(245\)
Exercise 17 – Bottle caps
Add: \(326 + 145\).
Ones: \(6 + 5 = 11\). Regroup 10 ones as 1 ten, and keep 1 ones.
Tens: \(2 + 4 + 1 = 7\).
Hundreds: \(3 + 1 = 4\).
So \(326 + 145 = 471\).
Sofia has 471 bottle caps.
Exercise 18 – Library shelf
Find the missing part: \(705 – 268\).
Write 705 as 7 hundreds, 0 tens, 5 ones.
Not enough ones. Trade 1 hundred for 10 tens. Now: 6 hundreds, 10 tens, 5 ones.
Not enough ones. Trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now: 6 hundreds, 9 tens, 15 ones.
Ones: \(15 – 8 = 7\).
Tens: \(9 – 6 = 3\).
Hundreds: \(6 – 2 = 4\).
So \(705 – 268 = 437\).
437 books are still on the shelf.
Exercise 19 – Road trip
Add: \(287 + 356\).
Ones: \(7 + 6 = 13\). Regroup 10 ones as 1 ten, and keep 3 ones.
Tens: \(8 + 5 + 1 = 14\). Regroup 10 tens as 1 hundred, and keep 4 tens.
Hundreds: \(2 + 3 + 1 = 6\).
So \(287 + 356 = 643\).
They drove 643 miles.
Exercise 20 – Game points
First add: \(450 + 175\).
Ones: \(0 + 5 = 5\).
Tens: \(5 + 7 = 12\). Regroup 10 tens as 1 hundred, and keep 2 tens.
Hundreds: \(4 + 1 + 1 = 6\).
So \(450 + 175 = 625\).
Then subtract: \(625 – 220\).
Write 625 as 6 hundreds, 2 tens, 5 ones.
Ones: \(5 – 0 = 5\).
Tens: \(2 – 2 = 0\).
Hundreds: \(6 – 2 = 4\).
So \(625 – 220 = 405\).
Ethan has 405 points.
Exercise 21 – Ticket sales
Saturday: \(238 + 100 = 338\). Add 1 to the hundreds digit.
Sunday: \(338 – 10 = 328\). Take 1 from the tens digit.
Sunday sold 328 tickets.
Exercise 22 – Tomatoes and peppers
(a) \(512 – 387\):
Write 512 as 5 hundreds, 1 ten, 2 ones.
Not enough ones. Trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now: 5 hundreds, 0 tens, 12 ones.
Ones: \(12 – 7 = 5\).
Not enough tens. Trade 1 hundred for 10 tens. Now: 4 hundreds, 10 tens, 12 ones.
Tens: \(10 – 8 = 2\).
Hundreds: \(4 – 3 = 1\).
So \(512 – 387 = 125\).
(b) \(512 + 387\): \(2 + 7 = 9\), \(1 + 8 = 9\), \(5 + 3 = 8\), so 899.
(a) 125 more tomatoes. (b) 899 in all.
