\(876 – 354 = 522\). Check: \(522 + 354 = 876\). Answer: 522.

Exercise 3 – Add with blocks

Total
After regrouping 11 ones as 1 rod and 1 one: 2 flats, 7 rods, 1 one.

Ones: \(3 + 8 = 11\), so regroup 10 ones as 1 rod. Tens: \(4 + 2 + 1 = 7\). Hundreds: \(1 + 1 = 2\).

\(143 + 128 = 271\). Answer: 271 stickers.

Exercise 4 – Regroup the ones

Ones: \(6 + 8 = 14\). Write 4 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: \(7 + 5 + 1 = 13\). Write 3 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: \(2 + 1 + 1 = 4\). Write 4.

\(276 + 158 = 434\). Answer: 434.

Exercise 5 – Regroup the tens

Ones: \(2 + 1 = 3\). Write 3. Tens: \(6 + 7 = 13\). Write 3 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: \(4 + 3 + 1 = 8\). Write 8.

\(462 + 371 = 833\). Answer: 833.

Exercise 6 – Regroup twice

+onestenshundreds11673843528
Two regroupings give 833.

Ones: \(6 + 7 = 13\). Write 3 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: \(8 + 4 + 1 = 13\). Write 3 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: \(5 + 2 + 1 = 8\). Write 8.

\(586 + 247 = 833\). Answer: 833.

Exercise 7 – Subtract and regroup a ten

Ones: 4 is less than 9, so regroup 1 ten as 10 ones: \(14 – 9 = 5\). Tens: 1 is less than 3, so regroup 1 hundred as 10 tens: \(10 – 3 = 7\). Hundreds: \(7 – 5 = 2\).

\(814 – 539 = 275\). Check: \(275 + 539 = 814\). Answer: 275.

Exercise 8 – Subtract and regroup a hundred

Ones: \(3 – 1 = 2\). Tens: 5 is less than 8, so regroup 1 hundred as 10 tens: \(15 – 8 = 7\). Hundreds: \(3 – 2 = 1\).

\(453 – 281 = 172\). Check: \(172 + 281 = 453\). Answer: 172.

Exercise 9 – Subtract across zeros

−onestenshundreds0107309634312
400 becomes 3 hundreds, 9 tens and 10 ones.

Ones: 0 is less than 7 and the next digit is 0, so regroup 1 hundred as 10 tens, then 1 ten as 10 ones: \(10 – 7 = 3\). Tens: \(9 – 6 = 3\). Hundreds: \(3 – 1 = 2\).

\(400 – 167 = 233\). Check: \(233 + 167 = 400\). Answer: 233.

Exercise 10 – Read the number line

\(358 + 200 = 558\), then \(558 + 20 = 578\), then \(578 + 6 = 584\).

Answer: 584.

Exercises 11 and up

Exercise 11 – Count up to subtract

\(43 + 300 + 12 = 355\).

Check: \(257 + 355 = 612\). Answer: 355.

Exercise 12 – Make a friendly number

\(400 + 145 = 545\). Since 398 is 2 less than 400, take away 2: \(545 – 2 = 543\).

Answer: 543.

Exercise 13 – Compensate to subtract

\(502 – 300 = 202\). Subtracting 300 took away 2 too many, so add 2 back: \(202 + 2 = 204\).

Answer: 204.

Exercise 14 – Estimate first

\(487\) rounds to 500 and \(316\) rounds to 300, so the estimate is \(500 + 300 = 800\).

Ones: \(7 + 6 = 13\). Write 3 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: \(8 + 1 + 1 = 10\). Write 0 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: \(4 + 3 + 1 = 8\). Write 8.

\(487 + 316 = 803\). Answer: 803.

803 is close to 800, so the answer is reasonable.

Exercise 15 – Check with the inverse

Ones: 5 is less than 8, so regroup 1 ten as 10 ones: \(15 – 8 = 7\). Tens: 3 is less than 6, so regroup 1 hundred as 10 tens: \(12 – 6 = 6\). Hundreds: \(6 – 4 = 2\).

\(735 – 468 = 267\). Check: \(267 + 468 = 735\). Answer: 267.

Exercise 16 – Compare totals

Ones: \(9 + 5 = 14\). Write 4 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: \(4 + 7 + 1 = 12\). Write 2 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: \(3 + 2 + 1 = 6\). Write 6.

\(349 + 275 = 624\) and \(624 > 612\). Answer: \(349 + 275\) is greater than 612.

Exercise 17 – Find the missing digit

Subtract to find the missing addend: \(705 – 258 = 447\).

Check: \(447 + 258 = 705\). The missing digit is 4.

Exercise 18 – Library books

Ones: \(8 + 9 = 17\). Write 7 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: \(6 + 5 + 1 = 12\). Write 2 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: \(2 + 3 + 1 = 6\). Write 6.

\(268 + 359 = 627\). Answer: 627 books.

Exercise 19 – Ticket sales

Ones: \(5 + 6 = 11\). Write 1 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: \(8 + 9 + 1 = 18\). Write 8 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: \(4 + 2 + 1 = 7\). Write 7.

\(485 + 296 = 781\). Answer: 781 tickets.

Exercise 20 – Apples left

Ones: 0 is less than 7, so regroup 1 ten as 10 ones: \(10 – 7 = 3\). Tens: 5 is less than 8, so regroup 1 hundred as 10 tens: \(14 – 8 = 6\). Hundreds: \(6 – 3 = 3\).

\(750 – 387 = 363\). Check: \(363 + 387 = 750\). Answer: 363 apples.

Exercise 21 – Bake sale total

Add the first two: \(164 + 238 = 402\). Then add the third: \(402 + 119 = 521\).

Answer: 521 treats.

Exercise 22 – Pages left

Step 1, pages read: \(175 + 208 = 383\).

Step 2, pages left: \(600 – 383 = 217\).

Check: \(217 + 383 = 600\). Answer: 217 pages.

Exercise 23 – Find the mistake

Ones: 2 is less than 7 and the next digit is 0, so regroup 1 hundred as 10 tens, then 1 ten as 10 ones: \(12 – 7 = 5\). Tens: \(9 – 3 = 6\). Hundreds: \(4 – 2 = 2\).

\(502 – 237 = 265\). Check: \(265 + 237 = 502\). Answer: 265.

Aisha wrote 7 − 2 in the ones column, but 2 is less than 7, so she had to regroup instead. Correct difference: 265.
