Multiply tens test answers: worked solutions
Question 1 – Products with tens A [2 pts]
- \(3 \times 6 = 18\), so \(3 \times 60 = 180\).
- \(8 \times 5 = 40\), so \(8 \times 50 = 400\).
Scoring: 1 point for each correct product.
Question 2 – Products with tens B [2 pts]
- \(7 \times 3 = 21\), so \(7 \times 30 = 210\).
- \(9 \times 6 = 54\), so \(9 \times 60 = 540\).
Scoring: 1 point for each correct product.
Question 3 – Boxes of rods [2 pts]
- \(5 \times 40\)
- \(5 \times 4 = 20\) tens, so \(5 \times 40 = 200\).
Scoring: 1 point for \(5 \times 40\). 1 point for 200.
Question 4 – Jumps on a number line [2 pts]
- \(4 \times 70\)
- \(4 \times 7 = 28\) tens, so \(4 \times 70 = 280\). The last jump lands on 280.
Scoring: 1 point for \(4 \times 70\). 1 point for 280.
Question 5 – Missing numbers [2 pts]
- \(6 \times 8 = 48\), so the number is 80.
- \(8 \times 3 = 24\), so the number is 8.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct number.
Question 6 – Mia's product [2 pts]
- No. She found \(4 \times 7 = 28\) but forgot that 70 is 7 tens.
- 28 tens is 280.
Scoring: 1 point for saying no with a reason. 1 point for 280.
Question 7 – Peach baskets [2 pts]
- \(8 \times 60 = p\)
- \(8 \times 6 = 48\) tens, so \(p = 480\): 480 peaches.
Scoring: 1 point for the equation. 1 point for 480.
Question 8 – Crayon boxes [3 pts]
- \(6 \times 9 = 54\) tens, so \(6 \times 90 = 540\).
- \(4 \times 7 = 28\) tens, so \(4 \times 70 = 280\).
- \(540 + 280 = 820\): 820 crayons.
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 9 – Which is greater? [2 pts]
- \(6 \times 70 = 420\) and \(8 \times 50 = 400\).
- \(420 > 400\), so \(6 \times 70\) is greater.
Scoring: 1 point for both products. 1 point for the correct comparison.
Question 10 – One more product [1 pt]
\(5 \times 9 = 45\) tens, so \(5 \times 90 = 450\).
Scoring: 1 point for 450.

20 points
Key facts behind this multiply tens test answers
- A multiple of 10 is a whole number of tens, such as 30 (3 tens) or 80 (8 tens).
- Multiply the basic fact first: 9 x 8 = 72, so 9 x 80 = 720.
- The answer is that many tens, so the product ends in 0.
- If the basic fact ends in 0, the product ends in two zeros: 5 x 60 = 300.
- Skip counting by the multiple of 10 gives the same answer.
