Le Défi des Nombres: a number target game in ten grids
Le Défi des Nombres is a number target game for Android that trains mental arithmetic. Each grid gives five numbers and a target, and the player chains additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisions to land exactly on it.
It suits students from Grade 4 (CM1) to Grade 9 (3ème), and parents and teachers also enjoy it.
The game is available in French and English, with no ads.

Why a number target game belongs next to your worksheets
Printable worksheets build accuracy on paper. Mental fluency is a separate skill, and it grows through short, repeated play. Because a number target game gives that practice without feeling like homework, it helps on days when a worksheet already took most of the energy.
Five minutes between two written sessions is enough. In that time, the student multiplies, divides exactly and plans ahead without noticing the effort.
How the game works
- Tap a number, then an operation, then a second number
- The result appears, so it can be used again straight away
- Each number can be used only once
- Divisions have to come out exact
- A solution always exists, so a stuck player can skip the grid to see one
Scoring that rewards bold moves
Addition and subtraction give 1 point, multiplication 2 points and division 3 points. When a player uses all four operations in one calculation, the Mathovore Strike earns 13 points. Because a round has 10 grids, the maximum is 130 points.
Four levels and timed challenges
The targets grow with the level, for example Easy from 10 to 40, Medium from 20 to 60, Hard from 40 to 120 and Expert from 60 to 300. Timed modes also include a 60-second Sprint, a 3-minute Marathon, a Mathovore Challenge and Survival, where each solved grid adds time.
Ranks and badges
Players climb six ranks, from Novice to Grand Master, unlock 12 badges and review statistics and a history of their calculations. Finally, an animated tutorial explains the rules in about 20 seconds.
Getting started
- Install the game from Google Play.
- Watch the short tutorial.
- Start with the Easy level and play one round of 10 grids.
- Move up a level once you solve most grids without skipping.
- Try a timed mode once a week to beat a personal record.
Fitting it into the week
Use the game as a warm-up before a worksheet from the Grade 6 section or the Grade 7 section. It is also a good companion to multiplication tables and exact division.
Language and platform
The game is in French and English, has no ads and saves progress with a Google account. It runs on Android phones and tablets, while an iPhone version is in preparation.
Skills the game builds
- Fluency with multiplication tables, since products appear in almost every grid
- Exact division and the link between factors and multiples
- Planning several steps ahead before touching the screen
- Estimating orders of magnitude to guess which operation gets close to the target
Teachers ask for these same habits when students solve multi-step word problems on a worksheet. As a result, a student who plays ten grids a day usually becomes faster at spotting that 48 is 6 times 8, or that 100 can be reached by 25 times 4.
