A number puzzle that does not feel like a worksheet

On this site, worksheets train careful written work, but Numéro Cible trains something different: thinking with numbers. To find the path, the player therefore needs multiplication tables, exact division, orders of magnitude and a plan.

It is a good Saturday activity once the student finishes the weekly worksheet, especially for a student who has finished early or who needs a break from written work.

The principle in 20 seconds

  • Touch a number, an operation and a second number
  • The result appears, so it can be used again at once
  • Each number can be used once, and divisions must be exact
  • The game always checks that a solution exists, so every grid can be solved
  • If you are stuck, skip the grid and look at a possible solution

Points for bold moves

Addition and subtraction give 1 point, multiplication 2 and division 3. When a calculation uses all four operations, it gives the Perfect Strike, worth 13 points. Because a round has 10 grids, it offers up to 130 points.

Four levels

Easy has targets from 10 to 40, Medium from 20 to 60, Hard from 40 to 120 and Expert from 60 to 300.

Four timed challenges

  • Sprint: 10 points in 60 seconds
  • Marathon: 30 points in 3 minutes
  • Perfect Challenge: one Perfect Strike in under 2 minutes
  • Survival: 45 seconds at the start, plus 10 seconds per solved grid

Ranks, badges, statistics

Six ranks lead from Novice to Grand Master of Numbers. Twelve badges such as Sharpshooter, Mental Acrobat and Speed Demon reward good play, while the statistics show success rate, best streak, best round and fastest time.

Getting started

  1. Install Numéro Cible from Google Play.
  2. Follow the animated tutorial and the illustrated rules.
  3. Play a round at Easy level.
  4. Check the statistics to see the success rate.
  5. Move up a level when you solve most grids.

Use in class and at home

For example, a teacher can project a grid and ask the class to find the route together. At home, you can pair it with the multiplication practice from the Grade 4 section. The game is in French and English, has no ads and saves progress with a Google account. It runs on Android, while an iPhone version is in preparation.

Skills behind the fun

  • Multiplication tables and quick recall of products
  • Exact division and reasoning about factors
  • Orders of magnitude, to guess whether a move gets closer to the target
  • Planning several steps ahead, which also helps with algebra later

A student needs these same mental habits when solving multi-step problems on a worksheet, and here they are practised in a form that feels like a game.
