Why a mental math app with a timer helps

Worksheets teach accuracy and presentation, but speed comes from a different kind of practice. Chrono Calcul puts the child in front of a timer for a minute or so, so it fits easily between homework tasks.

For example, parents who print weekly sheets from the Grade 2 section or other grade pages can also add one race a day.

Seven tracks, 74 events

The events follow the order teachers use in class: number bonds to 10, doubles and halves, multiplication tables, bonds to 100 and 1,000, quotient and remainder, decimals, fractions, percentages, divisibility rules, order of operations, signed numbers, algebraic expressions, proportionality and rounding.

Four ways to run

• Training: 10 questions on one event, which get harder, to win up to 3 stars
• Against the clock: as many right answers as possible in 60 seconds
• Survival: 3 lives, with rising difficulty
• Daily race: 15 questions, the same for all players that day

Questions that renew themselves

The app generates new calculations at each game. Since a child cannot memorise the answers, he or she has to compute.

Understanding mistakes

After a wrong answer, the correct one appears with an explanation of the method, for example going through the next ten, splitting a number or relying on the tables.

2. Then pick the track that matches the school year.
3. Run a training round of 10 questions.
4. Try the 60-second race and note the score.

Language and platform

The interface is in French and English, with no ads. The app saves progress to a Google account, so you find it again on another device. A large number keypad and big buttons suit children. The app runs on Android phones and tablets, while an iPhone version is in preparation.

How to build a routine

• One 60-second race each evening, noting the score in a notebook
• One training round on the event of the week
• The daily race on weekends, to compare with friends
• A printed worksheet when an event stays weak after several tries

Short races reveal which events are shaky. If a child often fails the percentages event, a printed worksheet on that topic is the natural next step. After a month, the medal case and the ranks show how much the child has progressed, so children see that regular practice pays off.
