AP Calculus AB The Chain Rule Quiz: 10 Questions with Explanations
This chain rule quiz for AP Calculus AB covers the chain rule (Common Core AP CALC AB 3.1), with a free PDF to print.
Test yourself on the chain rule for composite functions, including powers, trig, exponential and logarithmic layers with 10 multiple-choice questions. Pick one answer for each question, then read the explanation to see why it is right and which common mistake the other choices represent.

Chain rule quiz: 10 questions
Remember
- Chain rule: dy/dx = f′(g(x)) · g′(x), or dy/du times du/dx.
- Outer derivative first, inner function unchanged, then multiply by the inner derivative.
- d/dx e^(g(x)) = e^(g(x)) g′(x) and d/dx ln(g(x)) = g′(x)/g(x).
- Functions with three layers need the chain rule twice.
How to use this chain rule quiz
Answer each question, read the explanation that appears, and keep track of your score. A score of 8 out of 10 or more means you are ready for the test.
