Concavity quiz: 10 questions

Question 1
If \(f^{\prime\prime}(x) > 0\) on an interval, the graph of \(f\) is

Question 2
f″+concave up−concave downx = 4
Sign chart of f″.

What does the sign chart tell you about the graph at \(x=4\)?

Question 3
For \(f(x)=x^{3}-6x\), where is the inflection point?

Question 4
If \(f^{\prime}(2)=0\) and \(f^{\prime\prime}(2)=-5\), what does \(f\) have at \(x=2\)?

Question 5
-112345123456789xy
Graph of f(x) = x² − 4x + 5.

What is the concavity of \(f(x)=x^{2}-4x+5\)?

Question 6
If \(f^{\prime}(0)=0\) and \(f^{\prime\prime}(0)=0\), what should you do?

Question 7
Which statement describes the graph of \(f\) where \(f^{\prime}\) is increasing?

Question 8
-2-11234-6-5-4-3-2-11234xy
Graph of f(x) = x³ − 3x².

What is the inflection point of \(f(x)=x^{3}-3x^{2}\)?

Question 9
Which function has no inflection point?

Question 10
The graph of \(f^{\prime}\) has a local maximum at \(x=3\). What is true about \(f\)?

Remember

Remember
  • A positive f″ means concave up (slope increasing); a negative f″ means concave down (slope decreasing).
  • An inflection point needs a change in the sign of f″, not just f″ = 0.
  • Second Derivative Test: f′(c) = 0 and a positive f″(c) gives a relative minimum; a negative f″(c) gives a maximum.
  • If f″(c) = 0 the test fails; use the First Derivative Test.
