2nd Grade Arrays and Equal Groups Worksheet Solutions (PDF)

2nd Grade math worksheet solutions: Arrays and Equal Groups – Maths PDF

This arrays practice solutions for 2nd Grade covers arrays and equal groups (Common Core 2.OA.C.4), with a free PDF to print.

Arrays practice solutions (2nd Grade) – first page of the printable PDF

Each answer shows the addition sentence with equal addends and the total. Count rows and columns carefully, and check that adding the rows and adding the columns give the same number.

Grade 2 · Common Core State Standards: 2.OA.C.4

Arrays practice solutions: exercises 1 to 10

Exercise 1 – Muffin tin

Rows go across: there are 3 rows.

Columns go up and down: there are 5 columns.

3 rows and 5 columns.

Exercise 2 – Window panes

There are 4 rows with 3 windows in each row.

\(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12\)

There are 12 windows.

Row 1Row 2Row 3Row 43 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
Four rows of 3.

Exercise 3 – Chocolate squares

There are 4 columns with 2 squares in each column.

\(2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8\)

There are 8 squares.

Exercise 4 – Egg carton

\(5 + 5 = 10\)

There are 10 eggs.

Exercise 5 – Seed packets

\(2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10\)

There are 10 seed packets.

Exercise 6 – Two ways to add

Rows: \(5 + 5 + 5 = 15\)

Columns: \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15\)

Both sentences give 15 stamps.

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15
Five columns of 3.

Exercise 7 – Floor tiles

\(4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16\)

There are 16 tiles.

Exercise 8 – Draw a star array

Draw 3 lines of stars with 4 stars in every line.

\(4 + 4 + 4 = 12\)

There are 12 stars.

Exercise 9 – Cupcake tray

Add 4 for each of the 3 rows: \(4 + 4 + 4 = 12\)

12 cupcakes fit on the tray.

Exercise 10 – Desks in a classroom

\(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15\)

There are 15 desks.

Exercises 11 and up

Exercise 11 – Missing total

Five fours: \(4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20\)

The array has 5 rows and 4 columns.

The missing total is 20.

Exercise 12 – Missing row size

Try 3: \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12\).

The sum is 12, so each row has 3.

Each row has 3 objects.

Exercise 13 – Same total?

3 rows of 5: \(5 + 5 + 5 = 15\)

5 rows of 3: \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15\)

True. Both arrays have 15 objects.

Exercise 14 – Find the mistake

There are only 2 rows, so 4 should be written 2 times, not 3 times.

\(4 + 4 = 8\)

The correct total is 8.

Exercise 15 – Bags of apples

4 equal groups of 5: \(5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20\)

There are 20 apples.

5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20
Four bags of 5.

Exercise 16 – Sticker sheet

Whole sheet: \(5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25\)

Peeled off: \(5 + 5 = 10\)

Left: \(25 – 10 = 15\).

Check by counting the 3 rows left: \(5 + 5 + 5 = 15\).

15 stickers are left.

Exercise 17 – Garden rows

The garden now has 5 rows of 4.

\(4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20\)

There are 20 plants.

Exercise 18 – Two trays

Ethan: \(5 + 5 + 5 = 15\)

Aisha: \(5 + 5 = 10\)

Together: \(15 + 10 = 25\).

They have 25 cookies.

Exercise 19 – Which array is bigger?

A: \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12\)

B: \(5 + 5 + 5 = 15\)

\(15 – 12 = 3\).

Array B has 3 more dots.

Exercise 20 – Equal rows of stickers

4 rows: \(5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20\), so 5 in each row.

5 rows: \(4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20\), so 4 in each row.

5 stickers in each of 4 rows; 4 stickers in each of 5 rows.

Key facts behind this arrays practice solutions

Key facts
  • Rows go across and columns go up and down.
  • Repeated addition adds the same number again and again: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
  • Grade 2 arrays have up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns.
  • Adding the rows or adding the columns gives the same total.
  • Equal groups, such as 4 bags of 5, can be added the same way.

How to use this arrays practice solutions

Cover each solution, solve the exercise again, then uncover it and compare every line. If your answer differs, find the first step that changed and redo the exercise from there.
