Place value tells how much a digit is worth by where it sits. In a three-digit number, the digits show hundreds, tens and ones. In 358, the 3 means 300, the 5 means 50 and the 8 means 8. Ten tens make 100, and ten hundreds make 1,000.

Key facts in this numbers to 1000 lesson

Key facts
  • A three-digit number has hundreds, tens and ones.
  • 10 ones make 1 ten, and 10 tens make 1 hundred.
  • 10 hundreds make 1,000.
  • Numbers can be written in standard, expanded and word form.
  • A zero in a place means there are none of that unit.

What is place value?

Every digit in a number has a job. Its job depends on where it sits. In 245, the 2, the 4 and the 5 are worth different amounts, even though they are all just digits.

Place value
A three-digit number has a hundreds place, a tens place and a ones place. The place tells how much each digit is worth.
2 hundreds4 tens5 ones
Base-ten blocks for 245: 2 flats, 4 rods and 5 small cubes.

Look at the blocks. A flat is 100, a rod is 10, and a small cube is 1. So 245 is 2 hundreds, 4 tens and 5 ones.

How do you read a three-digit number?

Read the hundreds first, then the tens and ones together. Put the digits in a place-value chart to see their worth.

In 358, the 3 is worth 300, the 5 is worth 50 and the 8 is worth 8.

Why do 10 tens make 100?

Count ten rods and you have 100. Trade them for one flat. This is why the place to the left of the tens place is the hundreds place.

10 tenstrade1 hundred
Ten tens make one hundred.

Count by hundreds and you get 100, 200, 300 and so on. Ten hundreds make 1,000.

Ten jumps of 100 land on 1,000.

How do you write a number three ways?

Form Example
Standard form \(358\)
Expanded form \(300 + 50 + 8\)
Word form three hundred fifty-eight

Here is a method. Try it on 604, a number with a zero.

  1. Name each place. 604 has 6 hundreds, 0 tens and 4 ones.
  2. Write each value. The 6 is worth 600, the 0 is worth 0 and the 4 is worth 4.
  3. Add the values to build the expanded form: \(600 + 0 + 4\), or \(600 + 4\).
  4. Say the number. A zero in the tens place is skipped: six hundred four.

Remember that a zero holds a place. Without it, 604 would look like 64.

Numbers to 1000 lesson: questions and answers

What are the three places in a three-digit number?

The places are hundreds, tens and ones, from left to right. In 726, the 7 is in the hundreds place, the 2 is in the tens place and the 6 is in the ones place.

How many tens make 100?

Ten tens make 100. You can see this by trading ten rods for one flat in base-ten blocks, or by counting by 10s ten times.

What is expanded form?

Expanded form shows the value of each digit added together. For 482 it is 400 + 80 + 2.

How do you write a number with a zero, like 305?

Write 3 hundreds and 5 ones with a 0 in the tens place. Its expanded form is 300 + 5 and its word form is three hundred five.

How many hundreds make 1,000?

Ten hundreds make 1,000. Counting by 100s ten times gives 100, 200, 300 and so on up to 1,000.
