5th Grade Classifying Two-Dimensional Figures Test Solutions and Scoring (PDF)

Use this key to score the test out of 20 points. Every answer gives the reason, not only the name. Accept any answer that uses correct properties of sides, angles or parallel lines.
Grade 5 · Common Core State Standards: 5.G.B.3, 5.G.B.4
Question 1 – Name each shape [4 pts]
- A: rectangle (4 right angles, sides not all equal)
- B: rhombus (4 equal sides, no right angles)
- C: trapezoid (one pair of parallel sides)
- D: square (4 equal sides and 4 right angles)
Scoring: 1 point for each correct name.
Question 2 – True or false [2 pts]
- True. A rhombus has two pairs of parallel sides, so it is a parallelogram.
- False. A parallelogram does not need right angles. A slanted parallelogram is not a rectangle.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer with a reason.
Question 3 – Classify the triangle [2 pts]
Two sides are 10 cm, so it is isosceles. All angles are less than 90°, so it is acute.
Isosceles and acute
Scoring: 1 point for the classification by sides, 1 point for the classification by angles.
Question 4 – Venn diagram [3 pts]
The rhombus has 4 equal sides only. The rectangle has right angles only. The square has both.
Scoring: 1 point for each shape in the correct region.
Question 5 – Right triangle [2 pts]
The three sides are different: scalene. One angle is a right angle: right triangle.
Scalene right triangle
Scoring: 1 point for each correct classification.
Question 6 – Complete the tree diagram [3 pts]
A: parallelogram. B: rhombus. C: square.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct name.
Question 7 – Liam's claim [2 pts]
Liam is not correct. A rhombus is any quadrilateral with 4 equal sides. A square has 4 equal sides, so it is a rhombus, even though it also has right angles.
Scoring: 1 point for saying he is not correct, 1 point for a reason that uses 4 equal sides.
Question 8 – Four right angles [2 pts]
Squares and rectangles always have 4 right angles. A rhombus, parallelogram or trapezoid can be slanted.
Square and rectangle
Scoring: 1 point for each correct shape; subtract 1 point for each extra shape, to a minimum of 0.
20 points
