Mei evaluates \(25-3\times(4+2)\) as shown below.
Explain Mei’s mistake and find the correct value.
Key facts behind this grade 5 expressions test
- Do grouping symbols ( ), [ ] and { } first, from the inside out.
- Multiplication and division share one level: work left to right.
- Addition and subtraction share one level: work left to right.
- Words like add first, then multiply need parentheses when you write them as an expression.
- An expression like 3 × (5 + 7) is 3 times as large as 5 + 7.
How to use this grade 5 expressions test
Time yourself: the test is designed for an average student in 45 minutes. Answer the questions you are sure of first, then come back to the longer ones and check your units.
