Exercise 1 – Half of a share

Write \(1 \div 2\) as a fraction.

Write \(3 \div 5\) as a fraction.

Exercise 3 – Fraction to division

Write \(\frac{4}{9}\) as a division problem. Then write the same amount with the words “4 shared among 9”.

Find \(7 \div 8\) and write the answer as a fraction.

Exercise 5 – Sandwiches for three

Three friends share 2 sandwiches equally. Each sandwich is cut into 3 equal pieces, as shown. Write a division problem and find how much each friend gets.

Find \(17 \div 6\). Between which two whole numbers does the quotient lie? Mark its place on the number line.

Aisha’s art teacher has 22 pounds of clay to share equally among 8 groups. Each group has already used \(1\frac{1}{4}\) pounds. How much clay does each group have left?

Key facts

The fraction a/b means a divided by b.
The numerator is the amount shared. The denominator is the number of equal groups.
If a is less than b, the quotient is less than 1.
If a is greater than b, write the quotient as a mixed number: whole part plus remainder over divisor.
