This answer key helps fourth grade students see how each point on the place value test was earned. Also, it gives complete solutions to all nine questions, with each digit value, form conversion, and comparison explained.

Question 5 shows each comparison with a reason, question 6 orders the numbers by place from the left, question 7 reads two points on a number line, and question 8 explains why the two eights are worth different amounts. Add your points out of 20, then spend about 15 minutes redoing every question that lost credit. Then, write each number in a place value chart to check.

Use this answer key to score the place value test. Each solution shows the work, and the scoring note tells how the points are awarded. Total: 20 points.

4th grade place value test answer key: worked solutions

1 – Digits and places [2 pts]

Thousandshundreds7tens3ones8Oneshundreds2tens0ones5
The 3 is in the ten thousands column and the 7 is in the hundred thousands column.
  1. The 3 is in the ten thousands place: \(3 \times 10{,}000 = 30{,}000\).
  2. So, the 7 is in the hundred thousands place.

Scoring: 1 point for 30,000. 1 point for hundred thousands.

2 – Ten times as much [2 pts]

  1. \(9{,}000 \times 10 = 90{,}000\). 90,000
  2. \(900 \div 10 = 90\). 90

Also, Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer.

3 – Expanded form [2 pts]

  1. \(70{,}000 + 400 + 9\) (the thousands and tens places are 0).
  2. 6 hundred thousands, 2 ten thousands, 5 thousands, 0 hundreds, 0 tens, 8 ones: 625,008.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct form. Do not give the point if a zero term is written or a zero place is missing.

4 – Word form [2 pts]

  1. four hundred five thousand, thirty
  2. 70 thousand and 902 gives 70,902.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer. Accept correct spelling only.

5 – Compare numbers [2 pts]

  1. \(38{,}917 < 38{,}971\) (tens: 1 < 7)
  2. \(250{,}000 > 25{,}000\) (six digits against five digits)
  3. \(604{,}102 = 604{,}102\)
  4. \(99{,}099 < 99{,}909\) (hundreds: 0 < 9)

Scoring: half a point for each correct symbol.

Question 6 and after

6 – Order the numbers [2 pts]

020,00040,00060,00080,000100,000AB
A is at 35,000 and B is at 80,000.

\(471,035\) has 7 in the ten thousands place, so it is greatest. \(407,531\) has 0 there, so it is least.

Compare \(417,305\) and \(417,035\): hundreds 3 and 0.

\(471,035\), \(417,305\), \(417,035\), \(407,531\)

Scoring: 2 points for the correct order. 1 point if only one pair is swapped.

7 – Number line [3 pts]

  1. Each tick is 10,000. Point A is halfway between 30,000 and 40,000: 35,000.
  2. Point B is on the 80,000 tick: 80,000.
  3. \(35{,}000 < 80{,}000\), so A < B.

Scoring: 1 point for each part.

8 – Find the mistake [3 pts]

  1. First 8: \(800{,}000\). Second 8: \(80{,}000\).
  2. \(800{,}000 \div 80{,}000 = 10\), so 10 times as much.
  3. The two 8s sit in different places. A digit one place to the left is worth ten times as much, so the digits have different values.

Scoring: 1 point for each part. Part c needs a mention of different places or ten times.

9 – Farmers market totals [2 pts]

Word form: one hundred fifty-two thousand, eight hundred forty.

One tenth: \(152{,}840 \div 10 = 15{,}284\).

15,284

Scoring: 1 point for word form. 1 point for 15,284.

Key facts behind this 4th grade place value test answer key

Key facts
  • A digit in any place is worth 10 times the same digit one place to its right.
  • Places from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions.
  • Expanded form adds the value of each digit: 4,203 = 4,000 + 200 + 3.
  • Then, compare numbers from the left, place by place, and use the symbols <, >, or =.
  • 1,000,000 is ten times as much as 100,000.

Common mistakes with this 4th grade place value test answer key

  • Students lose points in question 3 by dropping a zero in standard form. Instead, write each digit in its place and fill any gap with zero.
  • Students give only the answer in question 8. Also, the key shows the value of each 8 and the ratio, and each part is scored.
  • Students ignore the direction in question 6. Instead, the key lists the numbers from greatest to least. Slow down at that step and check it twice.
  • Students skip word form details in question 9. Check the comma and the hyphens against the key. Slow down at that step and check it twice.

How to learn from your test

  • Sort your lost points into digit values, forms, and comparing. Practice the weakest group first. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.
  • Write each missed number in a place value chart. A chart shows the exact place where a digit or zero was misplaced.
  • Teachers can ask students to explain one correction to a partner by pointing to the digits in the chart.

4th grade place value test answer key: frequently asked questions

What are the values of the two eights in 884,000?

The first 8 is in the hundred thousands place, so it is worth 800,000. Also, the second 8 is in the ten thousands place, so it is worth 80,000. The first is 10 times as much as the second, even though both digits look the same.

How do I write 405,030 in words?

Say four hundred five thousand, thirty. The part before the comma is four hundred five thousand, and the part after is thirty. A zero in the hundreds place is not spoken but it holds that place in the standard form.

Why is 99,099 less than 99,909?

Both numbers have five digits, and the first two digits match. In the hundreds place, the first number has 0 and the second has 9. Since 0 is less than 9, 99,099 is less than 99,909.
