Read the explanation after each question to learn from any mistake. Grade 4 · Common Core State Standards: 4.NF.A.2 Question 1Which comparison is true?A \(\frac{5}{8} > \frac{3}{8}\)B \(\frac{5}{8} < \frac{3}{8}\)C \(\frac{5}{8} = \frac{3}{8}\)D \(\frac{3}{8} > \frac{5}{8}\)With the same denominator, compare numerators. 5 is greater than 3. The reversed statement shows the other order.Question 2Which fraction is greater, \(\frac{1}{3}\) or \(\frac{1}{5}\)?A \(\frac{1}{5}\)B \(\frac{1}{3}\)C They are equalD It cannot be toldThirds are bigger pieces than fifths. A bigger denominator does not mean a bigger fraction.Question 33/45/8Strips for \(\frac{3}{4}\) and \(\frac{5}{8}\).Which statement is true?A \(\frac{3}{4} < \frac{5}{8}\)B \(\frac{3}{4} = \frac{5}{8}\)C \(\frac{5}{8} > \frac{3}{4}\)D \(\frac{3}{4} > \frac{5}{8}\)\(\frac{3}{4}\) = \(\frac{6}{8}\), and 6 eighths is more than 5 eighths. The top strip is longer.Question 4Which fraction is less than \(\frac{1}{2}\)?A \(\frac{3}{8}\)B \(\frac{5}{8}\)C \(\frac{2}{3}\)D \(\frac{7}{10}\)Half of 8 is 4, and 3 is less than 4. The others have numerators more than half the denominator.Question 5Which comparison is true?A \(\frac{2}{3} > \frac{3}{4}\)B \(\frac{2}{3} = \frac{3}{4}\)C \(\frac{2}{3} < \frac{3}{4}\)D \(\frac{3}{4} < \frac{2}{3}\)In twelfths, \(\frac{2}{3}\) = \(\frac{8}{12}\) and \(\frac{3}{4}\) = \(\frac{9}{12}\). 8 is less than 9.Question 601/82/83/84/85/86/87/81ABA number line in eighths with points A and B.Point A is at \(\frac{1}{4}\). Which comparison is true for A and B?A \(\frac{1}{4} > \frac{3}{8}\)B \(\frac{1}{4} < \frac{3}{8}\)C \(\frac{1}{4} = \frac{3}{8}\)D \(\frac{3}{8} < \frac{1}{4}\)A is at 2 eighths and B is at 3 eighths. Points to the right are greater.Question 7Which list is in order from least to greatest?A \(\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{8}, \frac{3}{4}\)B \(\frac{3}{4}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{8}\)C \(\frac{1}{8}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{3}{4}\)D \(\frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{8}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{3}{4}\)In eighths the fractions are 1, 2, 4 and 6. The second list starts with the greatest unit fraction.Question 85/67/10Strips for \(\frac{5}{6}\) and \(\frac{7}{10}\).Which fraction is greater?A \(\frac{5}{6}\)B \(\frac{7}{10}\)C They are equalD It cannot be toldIn thirtieths, \(\frac{5}{6}\) = \(\frac{25}{30}\) and \(\frac{7}{10}\) = \(\frac{21}{30}\). The \(\frac{5}{6}\) strip is longer.Question 9Which statement correctly compares \(\frac{4}{5}\) and \(\frac{4}{6}\)?A \(\frac{4}{5} < \frac{4}{6}\) because 5 is less than 6B \(\frac{4}{5} > \frac{4}{6}\) because fifths are bigger than sixthsC \(\frac{4}{5} = \frac{4}{6}\) because the numerators matchD \(\frac{4}{5} < \frac{4}{6}\) because 6 pieces is moreWith the same numerator, the smaller denominator gives bigger pieces.Question 10Diego ran \(\frac{3}{4}\) mile and Mei ran \(\frac{5}{6}\) mile. Who ran farther?A Diego, because 4 is less than 6B They ran the same distanceC Mei, because 5 is less than 6D Mei, because \(\frac{10}{12}\) is greater than \(\frac{9}{12}\)\(\frac{3}{4}\) = \(\frac{9}{12}\) and \(\frac{5}{6}\) = \(\frac{10}{12}\). The denominators alone do not decide the answer. Remember Compare fractions only when they are parts of the same whole. Same denominator: compare numerators. Same numerator: compare denominators and the smaller denominator is greater. A common denominator turns a hard comparison into a numerator comparison, such as 8/12 < 9/12. Benchmark 1/2: a fraction is less than 1/2 when its numerator is less than half the denominator. Record a comparison with >, < or = and check it on a number line.
