4th Grade Lines, Rays and Classifying Shapes Worksheets with Answers (Free PDF)
This 4th grade lines and angles worksheet covers lines, rays and classifying shapes (Common Core 4.G.A.1, 4.G.A.2), with a free PDF to print.
Key takeaway: This worksheet helps fourth grade students practice naming lines, rays, and segments, identifying parallel and perpendicular lines, and classifying angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals.
- Topic: Lines, Rays and Classifying Shapes (4th grade)
- Content: 20 worksheet problems, from easy to challenging
- Standards: 4.G.A.1, 4.G.A.2
- Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This worksheet helps fourth grade students practice naming lines, rays, and segments, identifying parallel and perpendicular lines, and classifying angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals. Also, pictures, drawings, and everyday objects connect each term to something familiar.
There are 20 problems. The first six name figures and draw segments and perpendicular lines, and the next four count right angles and parallel sides and classify triangles. Then, four more sort quadrilaterals with a table and a game of always, sometimes, or never. Also, the last six are real situations with a city map, a picture frame, a ramp, a clock, floor tiles, and a flag. Then, allow about 30 minutes.
These 20 problems practice naming points, lines, segments, and rays, spotting parallel and perpendicular lines, and classifying angles. You will also sort triangles and quadrilaterals by their angles and parallel sides. They match Common Core 4.G.A.1 and 4.G.A.2.
The last six problems are real-world word problems about maps, frames, ramps, clocks, tiles, and a flag.

Key facts behind this 4th grade lines and angles worksheet
- A line segment has two endpoints; a ray has one; a line has none.
- Parallel lines never meet, and perpendicular lines meet at a right angle (90°).
- Right angles are 90°, acute angles are less than 90°, and obtuse angles are greater than 90°.
- Then, a right triangle has exactly one right angle.
- Quadrilaterals are sorted by pairs of parallel sides and by right angles.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade lines and angles worksheet
- Students label a wall and the floor as parallel. They meet at a corner, so they are perpendicular.
- Students call a frame a square because it has four square corners. Instead, if the sides are different lengths, the shape is a rectangle.
- Students name a slanted four sided tile a rectangle. A rectangle needs right angles, so with none it is a parallelogram.
- Students label a clock angle of exactly 90 degrees obtuse. Also, the hands make a right angle when the angle is exactly 90 degrees.
Tips before you start the worksheet problems
- Use the corner of a card as a right angle tester. Also, it is faster and more accurate than guessing by eye.
- Draw each shape described in words before you name it. Then, a quick sketch shows which properties it has.
- Teachers can ask students to name a real object for each figure, such as a ray of sunlight or a ruler edge.

4th grade lines and angles worksheet: frequently asked questions
How do you classify a triangle from its angles?
Look at the largest angle. Also, if it is less than 90 degrees, the triangle is acute. If it is exactly 90 degrees, it is a right triangle. If it is greater than 90 degrees, it is obtuse.
What does always, sometimes, or never mean in a sorting game?
Always means true for every shape of that kind, never means false for every one, and sometimes means true for some but not all. A square always has four equal sides, and a triangle never has four sides.
How many pairs of perpendicular sides does a rectangle have?
A rectangle has four pairs of perpendicular sides, one at each corner. Each corner is a right angle, so the two sides that meet there are perpendicular. Opposite sides are parallel, not perpendicular. A quick check like this takes only a few seconds and prevents most errors.
