5th Grade Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers Worksheets with Answers (Free PDF)
This 5th grade multiplying fractions worksheet covers multiplying fractions and mixed numbers (Common Core 5.NF.B.4a, 5.NF.B.6), with a free PDF to print.
Key takeaway: This worksheet helps fifth grade students practice multiplying fractions and mixed numbers with models, estimates, and real situations.
- Topic: Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers (5th grade)
- Content: 20 worksheet problems, from easy to challenging
- Standards: 5.NF.B.4a, 5.NF.B.6
- Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This worksheet helps fifth grade students practice multiplying fractions and mixed numbers with models, estimates, and real situations. Also, tape diagrams and area models show what each product means, and word problems show where it is used.
There are 20 problems. The first five multiply a whole number and a fraction, and the next five multiply two fractions with models and simplifying. Then, four problems multiply mixed numbers, including an estimate, and the last six are word problems about sugar, water jugs, a garden bed, leftover pizza, peaches, and raisins. Also, allow about 35 minutes.
These 20 problems practice multiplying fractions, whole numbers, and mixed numbers, as listed in standards 5.NF.B.4a and 5.NF.B.6. Early problems use tape diagrams and area models. Later problems use improper fractions and mixed numbers.
The last six problems are word problems about recipes, water jugs, gardens, pizza, peaches, and trail mix. Simplify each answer and write improper fractions as mixed numbers.

5th grade multiplying fractions worksheet: worksheet problems 1 to 10
1 – Whole number times unit fraction
First, find \(4 \times \frac{1}{5}\).
2 – Whole number times a fraction
Next, find \(3 \times \frac{2}{7}\).
3 – Improper product
Then, find \(5 \times \frac{3}{4}\).
4 – Fraction of a whole number
Now, find \(\frac{2}{3}\) of 15. The tape diagram shows 15 cut into 3 equal parts.
5 – Three fourths of 20
Also, calculate \(\frac{3}{4} \times 20\).
6 – Half of a third
First, use the area model to find \(\frac{1}{2} \times \frac{1}{3}\).
7 – Simplify the product
Next, find \(\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{3}{5}\).
8 – Product that simplifies to a unit fraction
Then, find \(\frac{3}{4} \times \frac{4}{9}\).
9 – Larger numerators
Now, find \(\frac{5}{6} \times \frac{3}{10}\).
10 – Product from a model
Also, the model shows the product of two fractions. Write the multiplication sentence and find the product.
Worksheet problems 11 and up
11 – Mixed number times whole
First, find \(2\frac{1}{2} \times 4\).
12 – Mixed number times fraction
Next, find \(1\frac{1}{3} \times \frac{3}{4}\).
13 – Estimate and multiply mixed numbers
Then, round each factor of \(2\frac{3}{4} \times 1\frac{2}{3}\) to the nearest whole number to estimate the product. Then find the exact product.
14 – Larger mixed numbers
Now, find \(3\frac{1}{2} \times 2\frac{2}{5}\).
15 – Half a recipe
Maya’s cookie recipe needs \(\frac{3}{4}\) cup of sugar. She makes \(\frac{1}{2}\) of the recipe. How much sugar does she use? The area model uses \(\frac{1}{2}\) for the height and \(\frac{3}{4}\) for the width.
16 – Water jugs
First, the Little League team has 6 water jugs. Each jug holds \(\frac{3}{4}\) gallon. How many gallons of water is that in all?
17 – Garden bed area
Sofia’s garden bed is \(2\frac{1}{2}\) feet long and \(1\frac{3}{5}\) feet wide. Find the area of the garden bed.
18 – Pizza left over
Ethan has \(\frac{5}{6}\) of a pizza left. He eats \(\frac{2}{5}\) of what is left. What fraction of the whole pizza does he eat? What fraction of the whole pizza is still left?
Worksheet problem 19 and after
19 – Peaches at the market
Now, at the farmers market, Priya buys \(3\frac{1}{2}\) pounds of peaches. Peaches cost $2.50 per pound. How much does Priya pay?
20 – Raisins for the team
Diego’s trail mix recipe uses \(1\frac{2}{3}\) cups of raisins for one batch. He makes \(2\frac{1}{2}\) batches. Raisins cost $1.50 per cup. How many cups of raisins does he need, and what do the raisins cost?
Key facts behind this 5th grade multiplying fractions worksheet
- A fraction of a number means fraction times that number.
- Fraction times fraction: multiply numerators, multiply denominators, then simplify.
- Write a whole number as a fraction over 1 before multiplying.
- Change mixed numbers to improper fractions, multiply, then write the answer as a mixed number.
- An area model shows the product as the overlap of shaded parts.
Common mistakes with this 5th grade multiplying fractions worksheet
- Students add the denominators or find a common one before multiplying. Also, multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators.
- Students leave an improper product as a fraction when a mixed number is requested. Instead, divide the numerator by the denominator.
- Students multiply whole and fraction parts of mixed numbers separately. Rename each mixed number as an improper fraction first.
- Students forget the second step in a story. Also, after the amount, multiply by the price or subtract from the whole.
Tips before you start the worksheet problems
- Draw a model for every new type of problem. Also, the model shows why the product is smaller or larger.
- Cancel before you multiply when you can. Then, fewer big numbers means fewer slips. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.
- Teachers can ask students to explain one product with an area model and with numbers. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.

5th grade multiplying fractions worksheet: frequently asked questions
How do you find a fraction of a whole number with a tape diagram?
Cut the tape into the number of equal parts shown by the denominator and shade the number of parts shown by the numerator. Also, for three fifths of 20, each part is 4, and 3 parts make 12.
How do you estimate a product of mixed numbers?
Round each factor to the nearest whole number and multiply. So, for 3 and 1 fourth times 1 and 3 fourths, round to 3 times 2, which is 6. Also, the exact product should be near 6.
How do you find the cost of a fractional amount?
Multiply the amount by the price. So, if you buy 2 and 1 half pounds at 4 dollars a pound, multiply five halves by 4 to get 10 dollars. Write the answer in dollars.
