- Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This worksheet helps fifth grade students practice reading line plots, building line plots, finding totals and differences, and leveling out amounts with fractions. Also, glasses of milk, seedlings, ribbons, and coolers give real data to work with.
There are 20 problems. The first six use one plot of glasses of milk, and the next one asks students to build a plot of ribbons. Then, five problems use a plot of seedling growth, and the last eight pool and share amounts or read data about apples, coolers, lemonade, sprouts, bike rides, and string. Also, allow about 40 minutes.
This worksheet has 20 problems on line plots with fractions (5.MD.B.2). You will read plots marked in halves, fourths and eighths, find totals and differences, and share amounts equally.
Early problems ask you to read a plot. Later problems add and subtract fractions or divide a total among containers. The last six are word problems with several steps. Show your work and include units.

4 – Greatest minus least
Now, solve. The line plot shows the amount of milk, in cups, in 8 glasses. How much more milk is in the fullest glass than in the emptiest glass?
Worksheet problem 5 and after
5 – Total milk
Also, solve. The line plot shows the amount of milk, in cups, in 8 glasses. Find the total amount of milk in all 8 glasses.
6 – Milk shared equally
First, solve. The line plot shows the amount of milk, in cups, in 8 glasses. Suppose all the milk is poured together and shared equally among the 8 glasses. How much milk is in each glass?
7 – Make a line plot
Next, solve. Maya measured 6 ribbons in yards: \(\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{3}{4}, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{2}\). Draw a number line from 0 to 1 marked in fourths and plot the data. How many X’s go above each mark?
8 – Seedlings taller than three eighths
Then, solve. The line plot shows how much 9 seedlings grew, in inches. How many seedlings grew more than \(\frac{3}{8}\) inch?
Worksheet problem 9 and after
9 – Total growth
Now, solve. The line plot shows how much 9 seedlings grew, in inches. Find the total growth of all 9 seedlings.
10 – Difference in growth
Also, solve. The line plot shows how much 9 seedlings grew, in inches. How much more did the tallest seedling grow than the shortest?
Worksheet problems 11 and up
11 – At least one half inch
First, solve. The line plot shows how much 9 seedlings grew, in inches. How many seedlings grew at least \(\frac{1}{2}\) inch?
12 – Short seedlings
Next, solve. The line plot shows how much 9 seedlings grew, in inches. Find the total growth of the seedlings that grew less than \(\frac{3}{8}\) inch.
13 – Level the trays
Then, solve. Four trays hold \(\frac{1}{8}\), \(\frac{3}{8}\), \(\frac{5}{8}\) and \(\frac{7}{8}\) pound of seeds. The seeds are poured together and shared equally among the 4 trays. How much does each tray hold?
14 – Trail mix swap
Now, solve. Maya has \(\frac{1}{2}\) pound of trail mix, Liam has \(\frac{3}{4}\) pound and Priya has \(\frac{1}{4}\) pound. They pool it and share equally. How much does each friend get, and how much does Liam give away?
Worksheet problem 15 and after
15 – Apples at the farmers market
Also, solve. Diego weighed 10 bags of apples, in pounds, for the farmers market. (a) How much heavier is the heaviest bag than the lightest? (b) What is the total weight of the apples? (c) He sells the apples for $2 a pound. How much money does he make?
16 – Water coolers
First, solve. A team has 6 coolers with different amounts of water, in gallons. The coaches pour all the water together and share it equally among the 6 coolers. How much water is in each cooler after sharing?
17 – Pitchers of lemonade
Next, solve. Four pitchers hold \(\frac{1}{2}\), \(\frac{3}{4}\), \(\frac{3}{4}\) and 1 quart of lemonade. Aisha pours everything together and refills the pitchers so each holds the same amount. How much is in each pitcher?
18 – Bean sprouts
Then, solve. Ethan measured 8 bean sprouts in inches. (a) How many sprouts are shorter than \(\frac{1}{2}\) inch? (b) What is the total height of the sprouts that are exactly \(\frac{1}{2}\) inch? (c) What is the total height of all 8 sprouts?
Worksheet problem 19 and after
19 – Saturday bike rides
Now, solve. Sofia rode her bike 7 times this month. The line plot shows the length of each ride in miles. She wants to ride 8 miles in all. How many more miles does she need?
20 – String for crafts
Also, solve. Priya cut 5 pieces of string for a craft project: two pieces of \(\frac{1}{4}\) yard, one of \(\frac{1}{2}\) yard and two of \(\frac{3}{4}\) yard. (a) Make a line plot. (b) Find the total length. (c) She needs 4 yards of string in all. How many more yards does she need?
Key facts behind this 5th grade line plots worksheet
- Each X on a line plot stands for one measurement.
- Next, multiply the count of X’s by the fraction to find the total at one mark.
- Add the totals from all marks to find the sum of all the data.
- Equal share = total amount ÷ number of containers.
- Greatest value minus least value tells how far the data spread.
Common mistakes with this 5th grade line plots worksheet
- Students count the Xs above only one mark when asked for more than a value. Also, count every X to the right of that mark.
- Students add one length for each mark. Multiply each length by its number of Xs, then add the products.
- Students divide by the number of marks when they level out amounts. Instead, divide by the number of containers.
- Students include the mark itself when a question says more than. Also, only count Xs strictly to the right.
Tips before you start the worksheet problems
- Cross out each X as you count it. Also, this keeps your counts from being doubled. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.
- Write the total for each stack in a small table. Then, the table makes the final sum easy to check.
- Teachers can ask students to build a plot from class data and ask each other questions about it.

5th grade line plots worksheet: frequently asked questions
How do you find the total of data on a line plot?
Multiply each value by the number of Xs above it, then add the products. Two Xs at three fourths and one X at one half give one and one half plus one half, which is 2.
How do you level out four amounts into equal shares?
Add the four amounts, then divide the total by 4. If four cups hold one fourth, one half, one half, and three fourths, the total is 2 cups, so each cup holds one half after leveling.
How do you count the data that are at least a given value?
Count the Xs at that mark and every mark to its right. At least includes the mark itself, while more than does not. Read the wording twice. A quick check like this takes only a few seconds and prevents most errors.
