5th Grade Graphing on the Coordinate Plane Test with Answer Key (Free PDF)
This 5th grade coordinate plane test covers graphing on the coordinate plane (Common Core 5.G.A.1, 5.G.A.2), with a free PDF to print.
Key takeaway: This test helps fifth grade students show that they can read and plot ordered pairs, find distances, and interpret graphs and tables on the coordinate plane.
- Topic: Graphing on the Coordinate Plane (5th grade)
- Content: 8 questions with point values, about 45 minutes
- Standards: 5.G.A.1, 5.G.A.2
- Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This test helps fifth grade students show that they can read and plot ordered pairs, find distances, and interpret graphs and tables on the coordinate plane. Also, it is worth 20 points and takes 45 minutes.
The eight questions begin with naming points, then complete a rectangle and find distances along grid lines. Then, later questions use points on the axes, follow moves on the grid, read a bike ride graph, turn a table into ordered pairs, and find a walking distance on a town map. Also, show your work and label your answers.
This 45-minute test covers ordered pairs, plotting in the first quadrant, distances along grid lines, and real-world graphs (5.G.A.1 and 5.G.A.2). There are 8 questions worth 20 points. Write the x-coordinate first.

5th grade coordinate plane test: questions
1 – Name the points [3 pts]
First, write the ordered pair for each point.
2 – Complete the rectangle [2 pts]
Next, solve. Points \(A(2,4)\), \(B(6,4)\) and \(C(6,7)\) are three vertices of a rectangle. Plot the points on the grid. Find the ordered pair for the fourth vertex, D, and find the area of the rectangle.
3 – Distances on grid lines [2 pts]
Answer each part.
- Find the distance between \((0,5)\) and \((9,5)\). (1 point)
- Find the distance between \((4,2)\) and \((4,8)\). (1 point)
4 – Points on the axes [3 pts]
Now, look at the points \((3,0)\), \((0,3)\) and \((3,3)\).
- Which point is on the x-axis? (1 point)
- Which point is on the y-axis? (1 point)
- Write the ordered pair for the origin. (1 point)
5 – Moves on the grid [2 pts]
Also, solve. Maya starts at \((1,1)\). She moves 5 units right, then 3 units up, then 2 units left. What ordered pair does she end at?
Question 6 and after
6 – Bike ride graph [3 pts]
First, solve. The graph shows how far Liam rides his bike.
- What does the point \((2,20)\) mean? (1 point)
- How many miles has Liam ridden after 3 hours? (1 point)
- If he keeps the same pattern, how many hours will it take to ride 60 miles? (1 point)
7 – Table to ordered pairs [2 pts]
Next, solve. A bag holds 5 apples. Write ordered pairs (bags, apples) for 1, 2, 3 and 4 bags. Then write the ordered pair for 6 bags.
8 – Walking in town [3 pts]
Then, solve. On a town map the park is at \((3,2)\), the library is at \((3,8)\) and the pool is at \((7,8)\). Each unit is one block.
- How far is the park from the library? (1 point)
- Also, how far is the library from the pool? (1 point)
- How far is the walk from the park to the library to the pool? (1 point)
Key facts behind this 5th grade coordinate plane test
- The x-axis is horizontal and the y-axis is vertical; they meet at the origin (0, 0).
- Next, an ordered pair (x, y) gives the move right first, then up.
- (2, 5) and (5, 2) are two different points.
- Points with the same x-coordinate or the same y-coordinate lie on a straight line, so subtract to find the distance.
- Axis labels explain what each coordinate means in a real-world graph.
Common mistakes with this 5th grade coordinate plane test
- Students swap the x- and y-coordinates when they write a point. Name the move right first, then the move up.
- Students find a missing vertex of a rectangle by guessing. Also, match one coordinate from each neighboring vertex.
- Students subtract coordinates that do not match the direction of the line. Check whether the line is horizontal or vertical first.
- Students answer only part of a three part map question. Instead, each part earns its own point. Slow down at that step and check it twice.
Test-taking strategy
- Plot every point on the grid before you answer. Finally, a picture shows the missing vertex or the path.
- Label the axes and the units on any graph you draw. Also, labels are part of a complete answer.
- Parents can review the night before by asking the child to plot three points and find the distance between two of them.

5th grade coordinate plane test: frequently asked questions
How do I find the fourth vertex of a rectangle on a grid?
Use the fact that opposite sides are parallel to the axes. So, the missing vertex takes the x-coordinate of one neighbor and the y-coordinate of the other. Also, plot all four points to check that the shape is a rectangle.
What does a point on a graph of a bike ride mean?
The first coordinate tells the time and the second tells the distance. So, a point such as (2, 14) would mean that after 2 hours the rider went 14 miles. Always check the labels on the axes.
How do I describe moves that go left?
Subtract from the x-coordinate when you move left and subtract from the y-coordinate when you move down. Start at (3, 3), move 2 right and 1 left, and you end at (4, 3). Track each move in order.
