Time practice solutions: exercises 1 to 10
Exercise 1 – On the hour
The hour hand points to 4 and the minute hand points to 12. 4:00.
Exercise 2 – Half past
The hour hand is halfway between 7 and 8, so the hour is 7. The minute hand points to 6, and \(6 imes 5 = 30\). 7:30.
Exercise 3 – Hands in words
The hour hand is past the 8, so the hour is 8. The minute hand on 6 means 30 minutes. 8:30.
Exercise 4 – Quarter past
The hour is 2. The minute hand points to 3: 5, 10, 15. 2:15.
Exercise 5 – Quarter to
The hour hand is almost at 11, but it has not reached it, so the hour is 10. The minute hand points to 9: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45. 10:45.
Exercise 6 – Twenty minutes
The hour is 5. The minute hand points to 4: 5, 10, 15, 20. 5:20.
Exercise 7 – Count the minutes
Jamal counted by ones, but each number is worth 5 minutes. Count by fives to 7: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35. \(7 \times 5 = 35\). 35 minutes.
Exercise 8 – Almost the hour
The number just before 12 is 11. Count by fives to 11: \(11 \times 5 = 55\). 55 minutes.
Exercise 9 – Words to digits
A quarter past means 15 minutes after the hour. 9:15.
Exercise 10 – Morning or night
Breakfast is in the morning, after midnight and before noon. 7:30 a.m.
Exercises 11 and up
Exercise 11 – After school
The afternoon is after noon. 3:20 p.m.
Exercise 12 – Digital to hands
The minutes are 45, and 45 is 9 fives, so the minute hand points to 9. The hour hand is between the 6 and the 7, close to the 7. Between 6 and 7.
6:45 on an analog clock.
Exercise 13 – Minutes after eleven
10 minutes is 2 fives, so the minute hand points to 2. It is 10 minutes after 11 o’clock.
Exercise 14 – Which is later
Both are in the 4 o’clock hour. 50 minutes is more than 35 minutes. Jamal’s bus comes later.
Exercise 15 – Write the time
The hour is 1. The minute hand on the 6 means 30 minutes. 1:30.
1:30 on an analog clock.
Exercise 16 – Two clocks
Leo’s clock: the minute hand is on the 1, so 9:05. Aisha’s clock: the minute hand is on the 10, so 9:50. 50 is more than 5, so Aisha’s clock shows the later time.
Exercise 17 – Put in order
All three are in the 3 o’clock hour, so compare the minutes: 5, 25, 50. 3:05, 3:25, 3:50.
Exercise 18 – Lunch time
55 minutes is 11 fives, so the minute hand points to 11. The hour is 11, and the hour hand is almost at the 12, so it is between 11 and 12.
Exercise 19 – Wake up time
Mei wakes up in the morning. 6:35 a.m.
Exercise 20 – Piano lesson
A quarter to 5 is 45 minutes after 4, so the time is 4:45 p.m. 45 minutes is 9 fives, so the minute hand points to 9.
4:45 on an analog clock.
