Grade 3 add subtract 1000 lesson (3rd Grade) – first page of the printable PDF

To add or subtract within 1,000, line up the digits by place value and work from the ones to the hundreds. Regroup when a column adds to 10 or more, or when the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit. Number lines, friendly numbers, and checking with the opposite operation help you stay accurate.

Key facts in this grade 3 add subtract 1000 lesson

Key facts
  • Within 1,000 means every number and every answer is 1,000 or less.
  • 10 ones make 1 ten and 10 tens make 1 hundred; trading them is called regrouping.
  • In addition, regroup when a column sum is 10 or more.
  • In subtraction, regroup when the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit.
  • Check a subtraction by adding the difference to the number subtracted.

What does it mean to add and subtract within 1,000?

You add and subtract three-digit numbers all the time: points in a game, pages in a book, tickets at a school play. Within 1,000 means every number and every answer stays at 1,000 or less.

Regrouping
Regrouping means trading 10 of one place for 1 of the next place. 10 ones make 1 ten, 10 tens make 1 hundred. Regrouping is also called carrying (adding) or borrowing (subtracting).
236158
236 is 2 flats, 3 rods, 6 ones. 158 is 1 flat, 5 rods, 8 ones.

In the picture, \(236 + 158\): the ones make \(6 + 8 = 14\), so 10 ones trade for 1 rod. The total is \(394\).

Which strategies help you add and subtract?

Strategy Idea Example
Place value Add each place separately \(300 + 40 + 7\)
Open number line Jump by hundreds, tens, ones \(347 + 200 + 50 + 6\)
Friendly number Round up, then fix the answer \(398 + 145 = 400 + 145 – 2\)
Column method Line up the places and regroup \(475 + 268\)
347547597603+200+50+6
Add 256 to 347 in three jumps: 603.

How do you add with regrouping?

  1. Line up the digits by place value, ones under ones.
  2. Add the ones. If the sum is 10 or more, write the ones digit and regroup the ten.
  3. Add the tens, including any regrouped ten. Regroup again if needed.
  4. Add the hundreds the same way.

Worked example: \(475 + 268\). Ones: \(5 + 8 = 13\), write 3 and regroup 1 ten. Tens: \(7 + 6 + 1 = 14\), write 4 and regroup 1 hundred. Hundreds: \(4 + 2 + 1 = 7\). The sum is \(743\).

Small orange 1s mark each regrouping.

How do you subtract with regrouping?

Start in the ones place. If the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, take 1 from the next place to the left and trade it for 10 of the current place.

Worked example: \(531 – 274\). Ones: 1 is less than 4, so regroup 1 ten as 10 ones: \(11 – 4 = 7\). Tens: now 2 tens, and 2 is less than 7, so regroup 1 hundred: \(12 – 7 = 5\). Hundreds: now 4, and \(4 – 2 = 2\). The difference is \(257\).

Orange numbers show the regrouped digits.

How can you check your answer?

Addition and subtraction undo each other. To check \(531 – 274 = 257\), add the answer to the number you subtracted: \(257 + 274 = 531\). Also estimate first: \(531\) is about 500 and \(274\) is about 300, so the answer should be near 200.

Add the answer and the number you subtracted: you should get 531 back.

Grade 3 add subtract 1000 lesson: questions and answers

What does within 1,000 mean?

It means the numbers you add or subtract, and the answer, are all 1,000 or less. Most problems use three-digit numbers.

When do I need to regroup in addition?

Regroup when the digits in a column add to 10 or more. Write the ones digit of the sum and carry 1 to the next place on the left.

When do I need to regroup in subtraction?

Regroup when the top digit in a column is smaller than the bottom digit. Trade 1 from the next place on the left for 10 in the current place.

How do I subtract across zeros, like 400 – 167?

Regroup 1 hundred as 10 tens, then 1 ten as 10 ones. Now 400 is 3 hundreds, 9 tens, and 10 ones, so you can subtract each column.

How can I check a subtraction answer?

Add the difference to the number you subtracted. If the sum equals the starting number, your answer is right. For 531 – 274 = 257, adding 257 + 274 gives 531.

How to use this grade 3 add subtract 1000 lesson

Read the definitions first, then follow the worked method line by line and redo the example on paper without looking. When every step makes sense, move on to the worksheet, then check yourself with the quiz.
