Time measurement test answers: worked solutions

Question 1 – Read two clocks [2 pts]

  1. Clock A: the minute hand is 4 marks past the 2 (\(2 imes 5 + 4 = 14\)). The time is 9:14.
  2. Clock B: the minute hand is 3 marks before the 12, so \(60 – 3 = 57\). The hour hand is almost at 12 but still at 11. The time is 11:57.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct time.

Question 2 – Elapsed time [2 pts]

1:35 to 2:00 is 25 minutes. 2:00 to 2:20 is 20 minutes. \(25 + 20 = 45\). The elapsed time is 45 minutes.

1:352:002:20+25 min+20 min
25 + 20 = 45 minutes.

Scoring: 1 point for splitting the time into jumps. 1 point for 45 minutes.

Question 3 – Lesson end time [2 pts]

3:50 plus 10 minutes is 4:00. \(45 – 10 = 35\) minutes remain, so the lesson ends at 4:35. 4:35 P.M.

Scoring: 1 point for a correct method. 1 point for 4:35 P.M.

Question 4 – Choose the unit [2 pts]

  1. A raisin is very light: g.
  2. Water is a liquid, so its volume is measured in L.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct unit.

Question 5 – Read the beaker [2 pts]

  1. The water is at the 7 mark: 7 L.
  2. \(7 + 2 = 9\): 9 L.
0246810L9 L
The dashed line shows the new level, 9 L.

Scoring: 1 point for each part.

Question 6 – Mass of boxes [2 pts]

  1. \(8 – 3 = 5\). The mass is 5 kg.
  2. \(36 \div 4 = 9\). One bag has a mass of 9 kg.

Scoring: 1 point for each part (0.5 for the right operation, 0.5 for the answer).

Question 7 – Science project [3 pts]

  1. \(20 + 10 + 25 = 55\). 55 minutes pass.
  2. 2:35 plus 25 minutes is 3:00. \(55 – 25 = 30\) more minutes gives 3:30. Diego finishes at 3:30 P.M.

Scoring: 1 point for part a. 2 points for part b (1 for the method, 1 for 3:30 P.M.).

Question 8 – Watering can [2 pts]

  1. \(6 \times 5 = 30\). She uses 30 L.
  2. \(45 – 30 = 15\). 15 L are left.

Scoring: 1 point for each part.

Question 9 – Apples and pears [3 pts]

  1. \(3 \times 4 = 12\). 12 kg.
  2. \(12 + 5 = 17\). 17 kg.
  3. \(20 – 17 = 3\). 3 kg more.

Scoring: 1 point for each part.
