3rd Grade Time, Liquid Volume and Mass Test Solutions and Scoring (PDF)

This time measurement test answers for 3rd Grade covers time, liquid volume and mass (Common Core 3.MD.A.1, 3.MD.A.2), with a free PDF to print.

This answer key gives a full solution and a scoring guide for each question of the time, mass and liquid volume test. Award partial credit where the guide allows it, and remember that a missing unit loses the final point.

Time measurement test answers: worked solutions
Question 1 – Read two clocks [2 pts]
- Clock A: the minute hand is 4 marks past the 2 (\(2 imes 5 + 4 = 14\)). The time is 9:14.
- Clock B: the minute hand is 3 marks before the 12, so \(60 – 3 = 57\). The hour hand is almost at 12 but still at 11. The time is 11:57.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct time.
Question 2 – Elapsed time [2 pts]
Scoring: 1 point for splitting the time into jumps. 1 point for 45 minutes.
Question 3 – Lesson end time [2 pts]
Scoring: 1 point for a correct method. 1 point for 4:35 P.M.
Question 4 – Choose the unit [2 pts]
- A raisin is very light: g.
- Water is a liquid, so its volume is measured in L.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct unit.
Question 5 – Read the beaker [2 pts]
- The water is at the 7 mark: 7 L.
- \(7 + 2 = 9\): 9 L.
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 6 – Mass of boxes [2 pts]
- \(8 – 3 = 5\). The mass is 5 kg.
- \(36 \div 4 = 9\). One bag has a mass of 9 kg.
Scoring: 1 point for each part (0.5 for the right operation, 0.5 for the answer).
Question 7 – Science project [3 pts]
- \(20 + 10 + 25 = 55\). 55 minutes pass.
- 2:35 plus 25 minutes is 3:00. \(55 – 25 = 30\) more minutes gives 3:30. Diego finishes at 3:30 P.M.
Scoring: 1 point for part a. 2 points for part b (1 for the method, 1 for 3:30 P.M.).
Question 8 – Watering can [2 pts]
- \(6 \times 5 = 30\). She uses 30 L.
- \(45 – 30 = 15\). 15 L are left.
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 9 – Apples and pears [3 pts]
- \(3 \times 4 = 12\). 12 kg.
- \(12 + 5 = 17\). 17 kg.
- \(20 – 17 = 3\). 3 kg more.
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Total score
20 points
Key facts behind this time measurement test answers
- There are 60 minutes in 1 hour; count by 5s, then by 1s.
- Elapsed time = the jumps from start to end, added together.
- 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams.
- Liquid volume is measured in liters (L).
- Add, subtract, multiply, or divide measurements that use the same unit.
How to use this time measurement test answers
Score your test with the point values shown for each question. Then read the worked solution of every question where you lost points and note the method to review.
