Shapes equal shares answers: exercises 1 to 10

Exercise 1 – Count the sides

Touch each side once and count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Shape P has 5 sides.

Exercise 2 – Name the shape

Shape H has 6 sides, so it is a hexagon.

Exercise 3 – Angles of a triangle

A triangle has 3 sides, and a polygon has as many angles as sides.

A triangle has 3 angles.

Exercise 4 – Find the quadrilateral

A quadrilateral has 4 sides. The sides are A: 6, B: 3, C: 5, D: 4.

Shape D is the quadrilateral.

Exercise 5 – Describe the shape

A shape with 4 sides is a quadrilateral.

Exercise 6 – Find the hexagon

The sides are A: 5, B: 6, C: 4, D: 3.

Shape B has 6 sides. It is a hexagon.

Exercise 7 – Sides by name

  1. A triangle has 3 sides.
  2. A pentagon has 5 sides.
  3. A hexagon has 6 sides.

Exercise 8 – Faces of a cube

3 faces show in the picture and 3 faces are hidden.

\(3 + 3 = 6\)

The cube has 6 faces.

Exercise 9 – Shape of a face

Every face of a cube is a square.

Exercise 10 – Rows and columns

Row 1Row 2Row 3Col 1Col 2Col 3Col 4Col 5
Row 1 is shaded: 5 squares.

There are 3 rows and 5 columns.

\(5 + 5 + 5 = 15\)

The rectangle has 15 squares.

Exercises 11 and up

Exercise 11 – Addition sentence

There are 4 rows with 2 squares in each row.

\(2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8\)

The total is 8 squares.

Exercise 12 – Tiles on a tray

\(3 + 3 + 3 = 9\)

There are 9 tiles on the tray.

Exercise 13 – Halves

  1. 2 equal shares are halves.
  2. Two halves make the whole, so 2 shares.

Exercise 14 – Thirds

The rectangle has 3 equal shares, so they are thirds. One share is shaded.

One third is shaded.

Exercise 15 – Fourths

3 shaded, 1 not shaded
3 shaded, 1 not shaded.
  1. 3 fourths are shaded.
  2. 1 fourth is not shaded.

Check: \(3 + 1 = 4\) fourths in the whole.

Exercise 16 – Equal or not

2 units, 4 units, 4 units
Widths: 2, 4 and 4 units.

The parts are 2, 4 and 4 units wide. The first part is smaller than the others.

No. Thirds must be 3 equal shares, and these parts are not the same size.

Exercise 17 – Pizza slices

  1. 4 equal slices are fourths. Jamal ate one fourth.
  2. \(4 – 1 = 3\), so 3 fourths are left.

Exercise 18 – Bigger share

The rectangle on the left has only 2 shares, so each share is large. The rectangle on the right has 4 shares, so each share is smaller.

One half is bigger than one fourth.

Exercise 19 – Same size, new shape

Each square is cut into 2 parts. In each square the two parts are the same size, even though the parts in Square 2 are triangles.

Yes. Both squares show halves, because halves only have to be equal in size.

Exercise 20 – Thirds of a cracker

  1. Aisha has 2 thirds.
  2. \(3 – 2 = 1\), so 1 third is left.

Exercise 21 – Shade a row or a column

Row 1Row 2Col 1Col 2Col 3
Shading one column: 2 squares.
  1. 3 squares are shaded.
  2. The rectangle has 6 squares in 2 equal rows. 1 of 2 equal rows is one half.
  3. The rectangle has 3 equal columns. One column is one third (2 of the 6 squares).

Exercise 22 – Garden plots

Row 1Row 2Row 3Row 4Col 1Col 2Col 3
3 bean plots and 9 other plots.
  1. \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12\), so 12 plots.
  2. Row 1 has 3 plots.
  3. 1 of 4 equal rows is one fourth.
  4. \(12 – 3 = 9\), so 9 plots.

Key facts behind this shapes equal shares answers

Key facts
  • Name a polygon by counting its sides: 3 triangle, 4 quadrilateral, 5 pentagon, 6 hexagon.
  • A polygon has the same number of angles as sides.
  • A cube has 6 faces and every face is a square.
  • Count a rectangle of squares by rows: add the number in one row once for each row.
  • 2 halves, 3 thirds, or 4 fourths each make one whole, and equal shares are the same size.
