Quadrilaterals test answers: worked solutions

Question 1 – Which are quadrilaterals [2 pts]

A has 3 sides and D has 5 sides. B, C, E, and F have 4 sides each.

B, C, E, F

Scoring: 2 points for all four letters. 1 point for three correct letters with no wrong letter, or four correct letters plus one wrong letter.

Question 2 – True or false [2 pts]

  1. A square has 4 equal sides. True.
  2. A rectangle that is 5 inches long and 2 inches wide has sides of different lengths. False.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer.

Question 3 – Two mystery shapes [2 pts]

  1. Rhombus
  2. Rectangle

Scoring: 1 point for each correct name.

Question 4 – Sort the shapes [3 pts]

Shape Rectangle? Rhombus?
Square yes yes
A 7 by 3 rectangle yes no
Rhombus with no right angles no yes

A trapezoid does not have 4 right angles and does not have 4 equal sides, so it is neither.

Scoring: 2 points for the table (1 point if 4 or 5 of the 6 cells are right). 1 point for a correct explanation.

Question 5 – Draw a new quadrilateral [2 pts]

Sample drawing: a kite with sides of 3, 3, 5, and 5 units. It has no right angles and not all sides are equal.

kite
A kite with two short sides and two long sides, no right angles

Scoring: 1 point for a closed shape with exactly 4 straight sides. 1 point for showing it is not a rhombus, rectangle, or square.

Question 6 – Equal parts on a grid [2 pts]

\(18 \div 3 = 6\), so each part has 6 squares. One way is to cut after 2 columns and after 4 columns. Each part is \(\frac{1}{3}\) of the rectangle.

The same grid rectangle cut by two vertical lines into 3 parts with 6 squares each

Scoring: 1 point for a cut into three parts of 6 squares each. 1 point for one third.

Question 7 – The cut square [2 pts]

The two parts do not have equal area. The triangle covers only a small part of the square, so it is less than one half.

No, Aisha is not right.

Scoring: 1 point for “no.” 1 point for saying the parts are not equal in area.

Question 8 – Corn bread tray [3 pts]

  1. \(\frac{1}{8}\)
  2. Bigger.
  3. The same tray is shared by fewer pieces, so each piece covers more area. One fourth is greater than one eighth.

Scoring: 1 point for each part.

Question 9 – Two cuts [2 pts]

Yes. Fourths only need equal area, and the parts do not need the same shape. Both children made 4 parts with equal area, so each part is \(\frac{1}{4}\).

Scoring: 1 point for “yes.” 1 point for saying equal area is what matters.

Key facts behind this quadrilaterals test answers

Key facts
  • A quadrilateral has exactly 4 straight sides and 4 corners.
  • A rhombus has 4 equal sides; a rectangle has 4 right angles.
  • A square is a rhombus and a rectangle at the same time.
  • Some quadrilaterals are not rhombuses, rectangles, or squares.
  • Equal parts have equal area, and each of n equal parts is 1/n of the whole.
