Every worked solution for the time, mass and liquid volume worksheet is shown below. Check the steps, not only the final answer, and redo any problem where the unit or the hour is different from yours.

Grade 3 · Common Core State Standards: 3.MD.A.1, 3.MD.A.2

Time measurement answers: exercises 1 to 10

Exercise 1 – Read the clock (1)

The hour hand is just past the 8, so the hour is 8. The minute hand is 1 mark past the 3: \(3 \times 5 = 15\) and \(15 + 1 = 16\). The time is 8:16.

Exercise 2 – Read the clock (2)

The minute hand is 2 marks past the 10: \(10 \times 5 = 50\) and \(50 + 2 = 52\). The hour hand is close to 11 but has not reached it, so the hour is 10. The time is 10:52.

Exercise 3 – Write the time

14 minutes after 6 o’clock is 6:14. Evening is after noon, so the time is 6:14 P.M.

Exercise 4 – Minutes until the hour

From 52 minutes to 60 minutes: \(60 – 52 = 8\). There are 8 minutes until 4:00.

Exercise 5 – Elapsed time in one hour

Both times are in the same hour: \(45 – 10 = 35\). The elapsed time is 35 minutes.

Exercise 6 – Find the end time

5:20 plus 40 minutes: jump 40 minutes from 5:20 to reach 6:00 (20 + 40 = 60). Practice ends at 6:00.

Exercise 7 – Number line jumps

Jump from 10:15 to 11:00: 45 minutes. Jump from 11:00 to 11:05: 5 minutes. \(45 + 5 = 50\).

10:1511:0011:05+45 min+5 min
The elapsed time is 50 minutes.

Exercise 8 – Find the start time

Jump back 30 minutes to 8:00, then back 25 more minutes (\(30 + 25 = 55\)) to 7:35. The movie started at 7:35 P.M.

Exercise 9 – Gram or kilogram

  1. A strawberry is light, so use g.
  2. A bag of cat litter is heavy, so use kg.

Exercise 10 – Reasonable liters

A bathtub holds more than a bucket (10 L) but not as much as a swimming pool. The best choice is 150 L.

Exercises 11 and up

Exercise 11 – Add masses

\(240 + 365 = 605\). The total mass is 605 g.

Exercise 12 – Fill the beaker

The water is at 6 L. \(10 – 6 = 4\).

0246810L10 L
The dashed line marks 10 L, so 4 L more fill the beaker.

Exercise 13 – Compare masses

\(5 – 2 = 3\). The pumpkin has 3 kg more mass.

Exercise 14 – Read the scale

  1. The pointer is at 450, so the mass is 450 g.
  2. \(1{,}000 – 450 = 550\), so 550 g more are needed.
01002003004005006007008009001000g
The pointer shows 450 g.

Exercise 15 – Equal groups of liters

\(6 \times 2 = 12\). Ethan buys 12 L of juice.

Exercise 16 – Share kilograms

\(24 \div 4 = 6\). Each crate holds 6 kg.

Exercise 17 – Homework time

From 4:25 to 5:00 is 35 minutes. From 5:00 to 5:10 is 10 minutes. \(35 + 10 = 45\). Lia works for 45 minutes.

Exercise 18 – Two trips

Total travel time: \(25 + 15 = 40\) minutes. From 7:35, 25 minutes later is 8:00, and 15 more minutes is 8:15. Noah arrives at 8:15 A.M.

Exercise 19 – Jug of water

Poured: \(4 + 3 = 7\) L. Left: \(9 – 7 = 2\). There are 2 L left.

Exercise 20 – Crates of oranges

Total: \(4 \times 18 = 72\) kg. Left: \(72 – 25 = 47\). 47 kg are left.

Key facts behind this time measurement answers

Key facts
  • There are 60 minutes in 1 hour; count by 5s, then by 1s.
  • Elapsed time = the jumps from start to end, added together.
  • 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams.
  • Liquid volume is measured in liters (L).
  • Add, subtract, multiply, or divide measurements that use the same unit.

How to use this time measurement answers

Cover each solution, solve the exercise again, then uncover it and compare every line. If your answer differs, find the first step that changed and redo the exercise from there.
