5th Grade Adding and Subtracting Decimals Worksheet Solutions (PDF)

This answer key shows each step for the 20 decimal addition and subtraction problems. Check that the decimal points are lined up and that placeholder zeros are in the right place. Each key also checks the answer with the opposite operation.
Grade 5 · Common Core State Standards: 5.NBT.B.7
Exercise 1 – Add tenths
6 tenths plus 7 tenths is 13 tenths.
13 tenths is 1 and 3 tenths.
Answer: 1.3
Exercise 2 – Hundredths grid
Blue: 0.45. Orange: 0.38.
\(0.45+0.38\): 45 + 38 = 83 hundredths.
Answer: 0.83
Exercise 3 – Line up the points
Write 3.5 as 3.50 and line up the decimal points.
\(3.50+2.25\): hundredths 0 + 5 = 5, tenths 5 + 2 = 7, ones 3 + 2 = 5.
Answer: 5.75
Exercise 4 – Add with regrouping
Hundredths: 8 + 5 = 13, write 3, regroup 1.
Tenths: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12, write 2, regroup 1.
Ones: 4 + 6 + 1 = 11, write 1, regroup 1. Tens: 1 + 1 = 2.
Answer: 21.23
Exercise 5 – Whole number plus decimal
Write 8 as 8.00. Add: \(8.00+3.64=11.64\).
Answer: 11.64
Exercise 6 – Three addends
Write with two decimal places: 2.50, 4.75, 10.20.
\(2.50+4.75=7.25\). \(7.25+10.20=17.45\).
Answer: 17.45
Exercise 7 – Subtract tenths
12 tenths minus 7 tenths is 5 tenths.
Answer: 0.5
Exercise 8 – Subtract hundredths
83 hundredths minus 45 hundredths is 38 hundredths.
Check: \(0.38+0.45=0.83\).
Answer: 0.38
Exercise 9 – Subtract from a whole number
Write 7 as 7.00. Regroup: \(7.00-2.38=4.62\).
Check: \(4.62+2.38=7.00\).
Answer: 4.62
Exercise 10 – Regroup across zeros
Write 20.5 as 20.50. Subtract: hundredths 10 − 8 = 2 (after regrouping), tenths 4 − 3 = 1, ones 9 − 7 = 2, tens 1.
Check: \(13.12+7.38=20.50\).
Answer: 13.12
Exercise 11 – Larger difference
Regroup: 6 − 9 needs regrouping. \(45.06-18=27.06\), then \(27.06-0.79=26.27\).
Check: \(26.27+18.79=45.06\).
Answer: 26.27
Exercise 12 – Estimate a sum
Estimate: 18.7 rounds to 19 and 5.34 rounds to 5. \(19+5=24\).
Exact: \(18.70+5.34=24.04\).
Answer: estimate 24, exact 24.04
Exercise 13 – Estimate a difference
Estimate: 32.48 rounds to 32 and 9.9 rounds to 10. \(32-10=22\).
Exact: \(32.48-9.90=22.58\).
Answer: estimate 22, exact 22.58
Exercise 14 – Missing addend
Subtract: \(9.25-5.60=3.65\).
Check: \(5.60+3.65=9.25\).
Answer: 3.65
Exercise 15 – School store receipt
\(3.49+1.75=5.24\). \(5.24+2.30=7.54\).
Maya spends \(\$7.54\).
Exercise 16 – Making change
\(20.00-13.68=6.32\).
Check: \(6.32+13.68=20.00\).
Jamal gets \(\$6.32\) in change.
Exercise 17 – Jogging miles
Write 3.4 as 3.40. \(2.75+3.40=6.15\). \(6.15+1.95=8.10\).
Aisha jogs 8.1 miles in all.
Exercise 18 – Growing plant
Grows: \(14.20+3.75=17.95\).
Trimmed: \(17.95-2.50=15.45\).
The plant is 15.45 inches tall.
Exercise 19 – Swim times
\(38.47-36.90=1.57\).
Check: \(36.90+1.57=38.47\).
Priya is faster by 1.57 seconds.
Exercise 20 – Farmers market budget
Total spent: \(8.75+6.40=15.15\), \(15.15+12.95=28.10\).
Left: \(50.00-28.10=21.90\).
Diego has \(\$21.90\) left.
