Accueil » Calcul Mental: a mental math app from CP to 5ème

Calcul Mental is a mental math app for Android that covers 76 skills from Grade 1 (CP) to Grade 7 (5ème). Students practise in short sessions, earn stars and badges, and see the right answer plus a calculation tip after each mistake.

It was designed by the team of the French site Mathovore.

Sessions last only a few minutes, which makes the app easy to keep up every day.

Why a mental math app helps every week

A printable worksheet gives a student a page of problems to write out. Mental calculation needs a different rhythm: little and often. Five minutes a day does more than a long session on Sunday evening.

This app gives parents and teachers a way to keep that rhythm alive alongside the paper work, with a path that follows the order in which skills are taught.

What is inside

76 skills along a learning path

Each school year has its own adventure path. Skills include number bonds to 10, doubles and halves, multiplication tables, decimals, fractions, percentages, order of operations and signed numbers.

Four ways to play

  • Practice: 10 questions on one skill, getting harder
  • Against the clock: as many right answers as possible in 60 seconds
  • Survival: three lives, with rising difficulty
  • Daily challenge: 15 questions, the same for all players that day

Motivation and feedback

  • Stars, experience points and 15 ranks to climb
  • 40 badges, personal records and daily streaks
  • The correct answer and a mental math tip after each error
  • A large number keypad and big buttons designed for children

Getting started

  1. Install Calcul Mental from Google Play.
  2. Choose the school year of the student.
  3. Open the path and start with the first skill that feels uncertain.
  4. Finish a practice round of 10 questions.
  5. Read the tip after each mistake and replay the round.

Pairing it with worksheets

Choose the skill that matches the worksheet of the week. For example, a student working on fractions in the Grade 5 section can play the fraction skills for a few minutes each evening. For older students, the Grade 7 section pairs well with the signed-number and order-of-operation skills.

Language and platform

The app is in French and in English, with no ads. It runs on Android phones and tablets, and an iPhone version is in preparation.

Advice for adults

  • Choose the skill together at the start, then let the child play alone
  • Praise streaks and personal records rather than perfect scores
  • Look at the tips together after a mistake and ask the child to explain them aloud
  • Keep sessions short, ideally under ten minutes

Mental math is also a good way to prepare for written problems. A student who knows that 7 times 8 is 56 without thinking has more attention left for the steps of a long problem on a worksheet.

The daily challenge is a pleasant way to compare scores with a friend or a classmate, since everyone gets the same 15 questions on the same day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Calcul Mental app?

Calcul Mental is an Android app that trains mental arithmetic with 76 skills from Grade 1 (CP) to Grade 7 (5ème). Sessions are short, with stars, ranks and badges that keep children motivated.

What game modes does it offer?

There are four modes: a 10-question practice round, a 60-second race against the clock, a survival mode with three lives, and a daily challenge of 15 questions shared by all players on the same day.

What happens after a wrong answer?

The app shows the correct answer together with a mental math tip, for example going through the next ten or splitting a number. This turns each mistake into a small lesson.
