3rd Grade Area Worksheet (PDF)
This area practice worksheet for 3rd Grade covers area (Common Core 3.MD.C.5, 3.MD.C.6, 3.MD.C.7), with a free PDF to print.
These 20 problems practice finding area by counting unit squares, multiplying side lengths, and adding the areas of parts (Common Core 3.MD.C.5, 3.MD.C.6, and 3.MD.C.7). The first problems use pictures, the middle ones use missing sides and the distributive property, and the last six are word problems.
Show your work and write each answer in square units.

Compare the areas of a 6-by-9 rectangle and a 9-by-6 rectangle. Which is larger?
Exercise 10 – Break apart a fact
Complete: \(8 \times 7 = (8 \times 5) + (8 \times \_\_)\). Then find the product.
Exercises 11 and up
Exercise 11 – Split rectangle
The top part is 4 feet tall and the bottom part is 2 feet tall. Find the area of each part, then the area of the whole rectangle.
Exercise 12 – Distributive property
Find the value of \(5 \times (6 + 3)\) by writing it as the sum of two products.
Exercise 13 – L-shaped figure
The bottom part is 8 cm wide. Every part is 3 cm tall. Find the area of the figure.
Exercise 14 – Rug area
Maya has a rug that is 8 feet long and 5 feet wide. How many square feet of floor does it cover?
Exercise 15 – Garden bed
A school garden bed is 11 yards long and 6 yards wide. Find its area.
Exercise 16 – Tiles for a wall
Jamal covers a wall that is 9 feet wide and 4 feet tall with square tiles. Each tile is 1 foot on each side and costs $2. What is the total cost?
Exercise 17 – Room with an alcove
Sofia drew the floor plan of her room. Find the total floor area.
Exercise 18 – Poster width
Ethan’s poster has an area of 63 square inches. It is 7 inches wide. How tall is it?
Exercise 19 – Compare two rectangles
Diego draws a rectangle 12 units by 4 units. Aisha draws a square with sides of 7 units. Whose shape has the larger area, and by how much?
Exercise 20 – Painting two walls
Liam paints 2 walls. Each wall is 10 feet long and 8 feet tall. What total area does he paint?
Key facts behind this area practice worksheet
- A unit square has sides 1 unit long and an area of 1 square unit.
- Rectangle area = length × width (rows times squares in each row).
- Area is always written in square units, such as square feet.
- The distributive property splits a big rectangle into two small ones: 8 × 6 = (5 × 6) + (3 × 6).
- Find the area of an L-shape by cutting it into rectangles and adding.
