Multiply test: questions
Question 1 – Mental math [2 pts]
- Find \(60 \times 30\). (1 point)
- Find \(8 \times 7,000\). (1 point)
Question 2 – Area model [2 pts]
Complete the area model and find \(52 \times 36\).
Question 3 – Four digits by one [2 pts]
Find \(3,862 \times 5\).
Question 4 – Two digits by two [2 pts]
Find \(67 \times 48\).
Question 5 – Properties [2 pts]
Show how to find \(5 \times 18 \times 20\) using a property of multiplication, and give the product.
Question 6 – Estimate and solve [2 pts]
Estimate \(48 \times 31\) by rounding each factor to the nearest ten. Then find the exact product.
Question 7 – Muffin boxes [3 pts]
A bakery packs 24 muffins in each box. It sold 38 boxes on Friday and 45 boxes on Saturday.
- How many muffins were sold on Friday? (1 point)
- How many muffins were sold on Saturday? (1 point)
- How many muffins were sold in all? (1 point)
Question 8 – Find the mistake [3 pts]
Jamal solved 46 × 23 like this: 46 × 3 = 138 and 46 × 2 = 92, so 138 + 92 = 230.
- Explain his mistake. (1 point)
- Find the correct product. (1 point)
- Use an estimate to show that 230 is not reasonable. (1 point)
Question 9 – Stadium sections [2 pts]
A stadium has 9 sections with 1,250 seats in each section. 2,400 seats are already sold. How many seats are still open?
Key facts behind this multiply test
- Partial products are the answers to each smaller multiplication; add them for the final product.
- Distributive property: 6 × 47 = 6 × 40 + 6 × 7.
- A 2-digit by 2-digit problem has four partial products in an area model.
- For multiples of 10, multiply the basic facts and attach all the zeros: 30 × 40 = 1,200.
- Estimate first by rounding to check that the product makes sense.
How to use this multiply test
Time yourself: the test is designed for an average student in 45 minutes. Answer the questions you are sure of first, then come back to the longer ones and check your units.
