5th Grade Graphing on the Coordinate Plane Worksheet (PDF)
This grade 5 coordinate plane worksheet for 5th Grade covers graphing on the coordinate plane (Common Core 5.G.A.1, 5.G.A.2), with a free PDF to print.
This worksheet has 20 problems on the coordinate plane (5.G.A.1 and 5.G.A.2). You will name and plot points in the first quadrant, find distances along grid lines, and read graphs of real situations.
The problems begin with ordered pairs and move to maps, tables and graphs with a scale. The last six are word problems. Always give the x-coordinate first and label axes with units.

Grade 5 coordinate plane worksheet: exercises 1 to 10
Exercise 1 – Read the points
Write the ordered pair for each point.
Exercise 2 – Plot a point
Plot the point \(G(3,5)\) on a coordinate plane. How many units do you move right, and how many up, from the origin?
Exercise 3 – Which number is the x-coordinate
Solve. In the ordered pair \((7,2)\), name the x-coordinate and the y-coordinate.
Exercise 4 – Point on the x-axis
Solve. Point P is on the x-axis, 5 units to the right of the origin. Write the ordered pair for P.
Exercise 5 – Point on the y-axis
Solve. Point Q is on the y-axis, 6 units above the origin. Write the ordered pair for Q.
Exercise 6 – Moving from a point
Solve. Start at \((2,3)\). Move 4 units right. Then move 2 units up. Where do you end?
Exercise 7 – Distance on a horizontal line
Find the distance between \((1,4)\) and \((7,4)\).
Exercise 8 – Distance on a vertical line
Find the distance between \((3,2)\) and \((3,9)\).
Exercise 9 – Plot a rectangle
Plot the points \((1,1)\), \((4,1)\), \((4,3)\) and \((1,3)\) and connect them in order. Name the shape and find its perimeter.
Exercise 10 – Same point or not
Solve. Are the points \((5,2)\) and \((2,5)\) the same point? Look at the graph and explain.
Exercises 11 and up
Exercise 11 – Vertices of a triangle
Write the ordered pair for each vertex of the triangle. Then find the length of side PQ.
Exercise 12 – School map
Solve. The map shows the school at \((2,3)\), the library at \((6,3)\) and the park at \((6,7)\). (a) How far is it from school to the library? (b) How far is it from the library to the park? (c) How far is the walk from school to the library to the park?
Exercise 13 – Table to ordered pairs
Solve. A pack of cookies has 6 cookies. The table shows packs and cookies. Write ordered pairs (packs, cookies).
| Packs | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cookies | 6 | 12 | 18 | 24 |
Exercise 14 – Dollars and hours
Solve. The graph shows the money Mei earns for hours of dog walking. (a) What does the point \((3,24)\) mean? (b) How much does she earn in 4 hours?
Exercise 15 – Plant growth
Solve. Ethan measured his bean plant each week. The graph shows its height in inches. (a) How tall was the plant in week 3? (b) How many inches did it grow from week 1 to week 4?
Exercise 16 – Road trip
Solve. The Rivera family drives on the highway. The graph shows the miles driven after each hour. (a) How far did they drive in 3 hours? (b) How many miles per hour is that? (c) At this speed, how far will they drive in 5 hours?
Exercise 17 – Lemonade stand
Solve. Sofia sells lemonade for $2 a cup. The table shows cups sold and dollars earned. (a) Write the ordered pairs. (b) What is the ordered pair for 6 cups? (c) How many dollars does she earn for 9 cups?
| Cups | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dollars | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 |
Exercise 18 – Treasure map
Solve. A treasure map starts at the origin. Diego walks 4 units right and 6 units up to the treasure chest. Then he walks 3 units up to a cave and 5 units right to a boat. Write the ordered pair for each place.
Exercise 19 – Walk to school
Solve. Diego’s house is at \((2,1)\) on a town grid. Mei’s house is at \((2,8)\) and the school is at \((5,8)\). Each unit is one block. How many blocks does Diego walk if he goes to Mei’s house first and then to school?
Exercise 20 – Saving money
Solve. Aisha saves $5 each week. After week 1 she has $5, after week 2 she has $10, and so on. (a) Write ordered pairs (week, dollars) for weeks 1 to 4. (b) Write the ordered pair for week 10. (c) In which week will she have $50?
Key facts behind this grade 5 coordinate plane worksheet
- The x-axis is horizontal and the y-axis is vertical; they meet at the origin (0, 0).
- An ordered pair (x, y) gives the move right first, then up.
- (2, 5) and (5, 2) are two different points.
- Points with the same x-coordinate or the same y-coordinate lie on a straight line, so subtract to find the distance.
- Axis labels explain what each coordinate means in a real-world graph.
How to use this grade 5 coordinate plane worksheet
