- Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
- Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white
This test helps fourth grade students show that they can read, write, compare, and order whole numbers up to one million using place value. Also, it is worth 20 points and takes 45 minutes.
The nine questions start with digit values and ten times as much, then convert between standard, expanded, and word forms. Then, later questions compare four pairs of numbers, order four six-digit numbers, read points on a number line, correct a classmate’s claim about two equal digits, and write a number in words and find one tenth of it. Also, show your work for partial credit.

Key facts behind this 4th grade place value test
- A digit in any place is worth 10 times the same digit one place to its right.
- Places from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions.
- Expanded form adds the value of each digit: 4,203 = 4,000 + 200 + 3.
- Then, compare numbers from the left, place by place, and use the symbols <, >, or =.
- 1,000,000 is ten times as much as 100,000.
Common mistakes with this 4th grade place value test
- Students say two equal digits in a number are worth the same. In 550,000 the first 5 is worth ten times the second, because of its place.
- Students compare numbers with different lengths by the digits alone. Also, a number with more digits is greater when it has no leading zeros.
- Students leave out a zero when they write a number in standard form. Instead, check that every place has a digit.
- Students order from least to greatest when the question says greatest to least. Also, read the direction before you start.
Test-taking strategy
- Do the digit and form questions first. Also, they are quick and build confidence for the comparing and explaining questions.
- Read each comparison from the left and stop at the first place that differs. This saves time and avoids mistakes.
- Parents can review the night before by asking the child to read large numbers from a newspaper or a map.

4th grade place value test: frequently asked questions
How do I find one tenth of a number?
Move each digit one place to the right, which is the same as dividing by ten. One tenth of 36,000 is 3,600. Each digit is worth one tenth as much as before, which is the reverse of the ten times rule.
What should I write for a number line question?
Find the value of each tick mark by looking at the labeled numbers, then count from a labeled mark to the point. Write the number in standard form and compare with a symbol, using the point farther right as greater.
Can I use commas when I write numbers on the test?
Yes, commas help you read large numbers and are standard in American writing. Put a comma after the thousands place, as in 305,020. Some teachers also accept a space, but commas are the safest choice.
