This 4th grade rounding test covers rounding whole numbers (Common Core 4.NBT.A.3), with a free PDF to print.

Key takeaway: This test helps fourth grade students show that they can round whole numbers to any place and use rounding to estimate.

  • Topic: Rounding Whole Numbers (4th grade)
  • Content: 9 questions with point values, about 45 minutes
  • Standards: 4.NBT.A.3
  • Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
  • Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white

This test helps fourth grade students show that they can round whole numbers to any place and use rounding to estimate. Also, it is worth 20 points and takes 40 minutes.

The nine questions start with rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand, then use a number line. Then, later questions find the range of numbers that round to a given value, estimate a sum and a difference, and round one number three ways. Also, one question uses a news number, another uses concert tickets, and two ask students to find a classmate’s rounding or estimate mistake. Then, show your work.

This 20-point test checks rounding of whole numbers and estimation (Common Core 4.NBT.A.3). Work alone, show your steps, and write each answer clearly. You have 40 minutes.

  • Time: 40 minutes
  • Total: 20 points

4th grade rounding test: questions

1 – Round to the place [2 pts]

  1. Round \(472\) to the nearest ten. (0.5 point)
  2. Also, round \(6,849\) to the nearest hundred. (0.5 point)
  3. In addition, round \(53,096\) to the nearest thousand. (0.5 point)
  4. Also, round \(285,400\) to the nearest hundred thousand. (0.5 point)

2 – Read the number line [2 pts]

8,7008,7108,7208,7308,7408,7508,7608,7708,7808,7908,800
A point at 8,746 on a number line.
  1. Also, round \(8,746\) to the nearest ten. (1 point)
  2. Round \(8,746\) to the nearest hundred. (1 point)

3 – Range of numbers [2 pts]

2,0002,5003,0003,5004,000
A number line from 2,000 to 4,000.

Then, find the smallest and the greatest whole numbers that round to \(3,000\) when rounded to the nearest thousand.

4 – Estimate [2 pts]

  1. Estimate \(6{,}348 + 2{,}719\) by rounding to the nearest thousand. (1 point)
  2. Estimate \(73{,}462 – 28{,}905\) by rounding to the nearest ten thousand. (1 point)

5 – One number, three places [2 pts]

Also, round \(416,573\) to the nearest ten thousand, the nearest thousand, and the nearest hundred.

6 – Attendance [2 pts]

First, the newspaper says that about \(12,000\) people came to the county fair. The number was rounded to the nearest thousand. Could the exact attendance have been \(11,499\)? Could it have been \(12,500\)? Explain each answer.

Question 7 and after

7 – Concert tickets [3 pts]

Sat.14,628Sun.9,375
Tickets sold on Saturday and Sunday.
  1. Round each day’s tickets to the nearest thousand. (1 point)
  2. Estimate the total tickets sold on both days. (1 point)
  3. Estimate how many more tickets were sold on Saturday than on Sunday. (1 point)

8 – Find the mistake [3 pts]

Sofia rounded \(7,396\) to the nearest hundred and wrote \(7,300\).

  1. Write the correct rounded number. (1 point)
  2. Explain her mistake. (1 point)
  3. Round \(7,396\) to the nearest thousand. (1 point)

9 – Is it reasonable? [2 pts]

Ethan adds \(3{,}874 + 4{,}129\) and gets \(7,003\). Use rounding to the nearest thousand to decide whether his answer is reasonable. Then find the correct sum.

Key facts behind this 4th grade rounding test

Key facts
  • To round, look at the digit to the right of the place you want.
  • Digits 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 round up. Digits 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 round down.
  • A number exactly halfway between two multiples rounds up: 2,500 rounds to 3,000.
  • Then, a 9 can carry: 9,960 rounds to 10,000 at the nearest hundred.
  • To estimate, round every number to the same place, then add or subtract.

Common mistakes with this 4th grade rounding test

  • Students list only the rounded value when asked for a range. The range runs from the smallest number that rounds to it up to the greatest.
  • Students believe a number just below a halfway point could have rounded up. It is closer to the lower multiple, so the report could not use it.
  • Students look at the wrong digit and copy the wrong rounding place. Underline the place first, then check the digit to its right.
  • Students skip the estimate in a reasonableness question. Round each number, then compare with the classmate’s answer. Slow down at that step and check it twice.

Test-taking strategy

  • Do the short rounding questions first, then use the number line question as a model for the harder ones.
  • Write the rounding place and the next digit beside each problem. This shows your reasoning for partial credit.
  • Parents can review the night before by asking the child to round the same number to three different places.

4th grade rounding test: frequently asked questions

How do you find the greatest number that rounds to a thousand?

Rounded to the nearest thousand, the greatest number ends in 499. The next number, ending in 500, rounds up to the next thousand. So the numbers from 500 below to 499 above all round to that thousand.

How do you decide if an answer is reasonable by rounding?

Round each number in the problem, do the calculation, and compare. For 2,950 plus 5,080, round to 3,000 plus 5,000, which is 8,000. An exact answer far from 8,000 is not reasonable.

What should I write for an explanation about a rounding mistake?

Name the digit you looked at and say what it means. If a student looked at the hundreds digit but needed the tens digit, say so. Then state the correct rule, such as round up when the digit is 5 or more.
