4th Grade Multiplicative Comparison Worksheet (PDF)

4th Grade math worksheet: Multiplicative Comparison – Maths PDF

These 20 problems practice multiplicative comparison (Common Core 4.OA.A.1 and 4.OA.A.2). You will write equations for statements such as 35 is 5 times as many as 7, tell additive and multiplicative comparisons apart, and solve with bar models and letters. The last six problems are word problems with more than one step.

Grade 4 · Common Core State Standards: 4.OA.A.1, 4.OA.A.2

Exercise 1 – Times as many

Maya has 5 stickers. Jamal has 4 times as many stickers as Maya. Write an equation and find how many stickers Jamal has.

Exercise 2 – Read an equation

Write a sentence that tells what \(24 = 6 \times 4\) means.

Exercise 3 – Write an equation

Write a multiplication equation for this sentence: 35 is 5 times as many as 7.

Exercise 4 – Two sentences

Write two comparison sentences that tell what \(42 = 6 \times 7\) means.

Exercise 5 – More or times

Tell whether each sentence is an additive comparison or a multiplicative comparison. (A) Liam has 3 more marbles than Noah. (B) Liam has 3 times as many marbles as Noah. (C) Liam has twice as many marbles as Noah. (D) Liam has 5 fewer marbles than Noah.

Exercise 6 – Ribbon length

A blue ribbon is 7 inches long. A red ribbon is 6 times as long as the blue ribbon. Find the length of the red ribbon.

Exercise 7 – Bar model: miles

Sofia3Dad33333
Sofia ran 3 miles. Her dad ran 5 times as far.

Sofia ran 3 miles. Her dad ran 5 times as far as Sofia. Find how far her dad ran.

Exercise 8 – Use a letter

Aisha has 8 pencils. Ethan has 7 times as many pencils as Aisha. Let p be the number of pencils Ethan has. Write an equation and solve it.

Exercise 9 – Unknown smaller amount

Bush?Oak6666
The oak is 24 feet tall and is 4 times as tall as the bush.

An oak tree is 24 feet tall. It is 4 times as tall as a bush. Write an equation with the letter b for the bush’s height and find b.

Exercise 10 – How many times?

A bike costs $96. A skateboard costs $24. The bike costs how many times as much as the skateboard? Write an equation with the letter n and solve it.

Exercise 11 – Compare bars

Red6Blue666
A red bar of 6 and a blue bar of 18.

The red bar has length 6. The blue bar has length 18. The blue bar is ____ times as long as the red bar.

Exercise 12 – Baseball cards

Diego has 9 baseball cards. Mei has 63 baseball cards. Mei has how many times as many cards as Diego?

Exercise 13 – Both comparisons

Priya has 12 books. Her brother has 4 more books than Priya. Her cousin has 4 times as many books as Priya. Find the number of books each one has.

Exercise 14 – Twice as many

Liam picked 15 apples. Maya picked twice as many apples as Liam. How many apples did they pick in all?

Exercise 15 – Honey jars

Fri.8Sat.888888
Friday and Saturday jars.

At the farmers market, Jamal sold 8 jars of honey on Friday. On Saturday he sold 6 times as many jars as on Friday. How many jars did he sell on Saturday? How many in all?

Exercise 16 – Little League runs

The Hawks scored 7 runs in a Little League game. The Eagles scored 3 times as many runs as the Hawks. How many more runs did the Eagles score than the Hawks?

Exercise 17 – School store prices

At the school store, a notebook costs \(\$2.00\) and a lunch box costs \(\$18.00\). The lunch box costs how many times as much as the notebook?
