This 4th grade multiplicative comparison worksheet covers multiplicative comparison (Common Core 4.OA.A.1, 4.OA.A.2), with a free PDF to print.

Key takeaway: This worksheet helps fourth grade students practice multiplicative comparison with equations, bar models, and word problems.

  • Topic: Multiplicative Comparison (4th grade)
  • Content: 21 worksheet problems, from easy to challenging
  • Standards: 4.OA.A.1, 4.OA.A.2
  • Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
  • Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white

This worksheet helps fourth grade students practice multiplicative comparison with equations, bar models, and word problems. Students decide whether a situation is additive or multiplicative and then write and solve an equation with a symbol or a letter for the unknown.

There are 21 problems. The first five read and write comparison equations and sentences, and the next seven use bar models, a letter for the unknown, and questions about how many times. Also, the last nine are multi step word problems about books, apples, honey jars, runs, prices, a road trip, weights, a mistake, and bake sale trays. Then, allow about 35 minutes.

These 20 problems practice multiplicative comparison (Common Core 4.OA.A.1 and 4.OA.A.2). You will write equations for statements such as 35 is 5 times as many as 7, tell additive and multiplicative comparisons apart, and solve with bar models and letters. The last six problems are word problems with more than one step.

4th grade multiplicative comparison worksheet: worksheet problems 1 to 10

1 – Times as many

Maya has 5 stickers. Jamal has 4 times as many stickers as Maya. Write an equation and find how many stickers Jamal has.

2 – Read an equation

Next, write a sentence that tells what \(24 = 6 \times 4\) means.

3 – Write an equation

Then, write a multiplication equation for this sentence: 35 is 5 times as many as 7.

4 – Two sentences

Now, write two comparison sentences that tell what \(42 = 6 \times 7\) means.

5 – More or times

Also, tell whether each sentence is an additive comparison or a multiplicative comparison. (A) Liam has 3 more marbles than Noah. (B) Liam has 3 times as many marbles as Noah. (C) Liam has twice as many marbles as Noah. (D) Liam has 5 fewer marbles than Noah.

6 – Ribbon length

First, a blue ribbon is 7 inches long. A red ribbon is 6 times as long as the blue ribbon. Find the length of the red ribbon.

7 – Bar model: miles

Sofia3Dad33333
Sofia ran 3 miles. Her dad ran 5 times as far.

Sofia ran 3 miles. Her dad ran 5 times as far as Sofia. Find how far her dad ran.

8 – Use a letter

Aisha has 8 pencils. Ethan has 7 times as many pencils as Aisha. Let p be the number of pencils Ethan has. Write an equation and solve it.

Worksheet problem 9 and after

9 – Unknown smaller amount

Bush?Oak6666
The oak is 24 feet tall and is 4 times as tall as the bush.

Now, an oak tree is 24 feet tall. It is 4 times as tall as a bush. Write an equation with the letter b for the bush’s height and find b.

10 – How many times?

Also, a bike costs $96. A skateboard costs $24. The bike costs how many times as much as the skateboard? Write an equation with the letter n and solve it.

Worksheet problems 11 and up

11 – Compare bars

Red6Blue666
A red bar of 6 and a blue bar of 18.

First, the red bar has length 6. The blue bar has length 18. The blue bar is ____ times as long as the red bar.

12 – Baseball cards

Diego has 9 baseball cards. Mei has 63 baseball cards. Mei has how many times as many cards as Diego?

13 – Both comparisons

Priya has 12 books. Her brother has 4 more books than Priya. Her cousin has 4 times as many books as Priya. Find the number of books each one has.

14 – Twice as many

Liam picked 15 apples. Maya picked twice as many apples as Liam. How many apples did they pick in all?

15 – Honey jars

Fri.8Sat.888888
Friday and Saturday jars.

At the farmers market, Jamal sold 8 jars of honey on Friday. On Saturday he sold 6 times as many jars as on Friday. How many jars did he sell on Saturday? How many in all?

16 – Little League runs

First, the Hawks scored 7 runs in a Little League game. The Eagles scored 3 times as many runs as the Hawks. How many more runs did the Eagles score than the Hawks?

17 – School store prices

Next, at the school store, a notebook costs \(\$2.00\) and a lunch box costs \(\$18.00\). The lunch box costs how many times as much as the notebook?

Worksheet problem 18 and after

18 – Road trip days

Mon.45Tue.45454545Wed.454545
Miles driven each day.

On Monday, Aisha’s family drove 45 miles. Also, on Tuesday they drove 4 times as far as on Monday. On Wednesday they drove 3 times as far as on Monday. How many miles did they drive in all three days?

19 – Weights

Now, a bag of flour weighs 5 pounds. A bag of potatoes weighs 3 times as much as the flour. A watermelon weighs 2 times as much as the potatoes. Find the weight of the potatoes and the weight of the watermelon.

20 – Find the mistake

Ethan says that 30 is 6 times as many as 5, so he writes 30 = 6 + 5. Explain his mistake and write the correct equation.

21 – Bake sale trays

First, at a bake sale, a table has 9 trays of muffins. A second table has 4 times as many trays. A third table has 5 fewer trays than the second table. How many trays are on the third table?

Key facts behind this 4th grade multiplicative comparison worksheet

Key facts
  • “A is n times as many as B” means A = n × B.
  • “More than” and “fewer than” are additive comparisons; “times as many” is multiplicative.
  • To find the bigger amount, multiply. To find the smaller amount or the number of times, divide.
  • Next, use a letter for the unknown, such as 28 = 4 × b.
  • A bar model with equal units shows the comparison clearly.

Common mistakes with this 4th grade multiplicative comparison worksheet

  • Students label every sentence with the word more as a multiplicative comparison. Instead, only sentences that say times as many multiply.
  • Students write an addition equation for a times as many statement. Also, if 20 is 4 times as many as 5, the equation is multiplication, not 4 plus 5.
  • Students find one amount in a chain and stop. Instead, when a third amount is fewer than the second, subtract after you multiply.
  • Students treat an additive and a multiplicative comparison the same way. Also, one uses 4 more, an addition, and the other uses 4 times as many.

Tips before you start the worksheet problems

  • Before you write an equation, say the comparison in your own words. Also, hearing it as a sentence helps you choose multiplication.
  • Draw a bar model when the unknown is not the answer you expect. Then, the model shows if the unknown is a total, a part, or a multiplier.
  • Teachers can ask students to write one additive and one multiplicative comparison about the same two numbers. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.

4th grade multiplicative comparison worksheet: frequently asked questions

How do you write an equation with a letter for the unknown?

Choose a letter that stands for the missing number and write the multiplication fact. If a tree is 35 feet tall and 5 times as tall as a bush with height b, write 35 equals 5 times b. Then divide to find b, which is 7.

How do you solve a problem with two comparisons?

Solve one comparison at a time, using the result in the next step. If a bag of rice weighs 4 pounds and beans weigh 3 times as much, beans weigh 12 pounds. A box that weighs 2 times as much as the beans weighs 24 pounds.

How can you check a comparison answer?

Reread the story with your answer in it. If a shelf is 8 feet and a table is 3 times as long, then 3 times 8 should equal the table’s length. If the numbers do not fit the sentence, find the step where the operation changed.
