This 4th grade measurement conversions test answer key covers measurement units and conversions (Common Core 4.MD.A.1, 4.MD.A.2), with a free PDF to print.

Key takeaway: This answer key helps fourth grade students see how each point on the measurement test was earned.

  • Topic: Measurement Units and Conversions (4th grade)
  • Content: Worked solutions and a scoring guide for 8 questions
  • Standards: 4.MD.A.1, 4.MD.A.2
  • Answers: Every step shown, with the method to review
  • Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white

This answer key helps fourth grade students see how each point on the measurement test was earned. Also, it gives complete solutions to all eight questions, with the conversion fact, the arithmetic, and the final answer with its unit.

The key shows how to compare mixed measurements by converting to one unit in question 5, how to total a walking route and rewrite it in kilometers and meters in question 6, and how to find an end time with rollover in question 8. Add your points out of 20, then spend about 15 minutes redoing every question that lost credit.

Use this answer key to score the test out of 20 points. Each solution shows the correct work, and the scoring note tells how many points to give for each part, including partial credit for correct steps.

4th grade measurement conversions test answer key: worked solutions

1 – Long distances and masses [2 pts]

  1. \(6 \times 1{,}000 = 6{,}000\text{ m}\)
  2. \(4 \times 1{,}000 = 4{,}000\text{ g}\)

Scoring: 1 point for each correct conversion with its unit.

2 – Short lengths and liquids [2 pts]

  1. \(9 \times 100 = 900\text{ cm}\)
  2. \(3 \times 1{,}000 = 3{,}000\text{ mL}\)

Also, Scoring: 1 point for each correct conversion with its unit.

3 – Weight and seconds [2 pts]

  1. \(5 \times 16 = 80\text{ oz}\)
  2. \(8 \times 60 = 480\text{ sec}\)

Scoring: 1 point for each correct conversion with its unit.

4 – Mixed units [2 pts]

  1. \(5 \times 60 = 300\text{ min}\)
  2. \(2 \times 100 + 8 = 208\text{ cm}\)

Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer with its unit.

5 – Compare measurements [3 pts]

  1. \(4\text{ kg} = 4{,}000\text{ g}\), and \(4{,}000 < 4{,}050\). Answer: <
  2. \(3\text{ min} = 180\text{ sec}\), and \(180 > 170\). Answer: >
  3. \(6\text{ lb} = 96\text{ oz}\), and \(96 > 90\). Answer: >

Scoring: 1 point for each correct symbol. Award the point only if the measurements were compared in the same unit.

6 – Walking route [3 pts]

  1. \(1\text{ km } 400\text{ m} = 1{,}000 + 400 = 1{,}400\text{ m}\). Total: \(1{,}400 + 2{,}750 = 4{,}150\text{ m}\).
  2. \(4{,}150 = 4 \times 1{,}000 + 150\), so 4 km 150 m.

Scoring: part a, 1 point for changing to meters and 1 point for the correct sum. Part b, 1 point.

1,400 m2,750 m4,150 m
1,400 + 2,750 = 4,150.

Question 7 and after

7 – Juice cups [3 pts]

  1. \(8 \times 250 = 2{,}000\text{ mL}\)
  2. \(3\text{ L} = 3{,}000\text{ mL}\), and \(3{,}000 – 2{,}000 = 1{,}000\text{ mL}\), which is 1 L.

Scoring: part a, 1 point. Part b, 1 point for changing 3 L to milliliters and 1 point for the correct answer.

8 – Tutoring session [3 pts]

  1. \(60 + 35 = 95\text{ min}\)
  2. 4:40 + 1 hr = 5:40. Then 5:40 + 20 min = 6:00, and 15 more minutes is 6:15. So, the session ends at 6:15 PM.

Scoring: part a, 1 point. Part b, 1 point for adding the hour and 1 point for the correct end time.

1 hr35 min95 min4:40 PM then 5:40 PM then 6:15 PM
First 60 minutes, then 35 minutes.

Key facts behind this 4th grade measurement conversions test answer key

Key facts
  • 1 km = 1,000 m and 1 m = 100 cm.
  • 1 kg = 1,000 g and 1 L = 1,000 mL.
  • 1 lb = 16 oz, 1 hr = 60 min, and 1 min = 60 sec.
  • Larger unit to smaller unit: multiply, and the number gets bigger.
  • Change both amounts to the same unit before you add or subtract.

Common mistakes with this 4th grade measurement conversions test answer key

  • Students give the right number with the wrong unit and lose a point. Also, compare your unit with the key in every answer.
  • Students skip part (b) of question 6. The total in kilometers and meters is a separate point, so do the second conversion.
  • Students forget to subtract in question 7. Instead, after finding the total poured, subtract from 3 liters to find what is left.
  • Students misread the clock in question 8. Also, read the start time carefully before adding the length. Slow down at that step and check it twice.

How to learn from your test

  • Sort lost points into conversion facts, arithmetic, and word problems. Practice the group with the most lost points first.
  • Redo question 7 with different numbers. Then, changing the number of cups shows if you understand the steps.
  • Teachers can ask students to explain one corrected answer to a partner using a double number line, pointing to where each unit fact appears.

4th grade measurement conversions test answer key: frequently asked questions

How many milliliters are left in question 7?

Eight cups of 250 milliliters use 2,000 milliliters in all. The jug holds 3 liters, which is 3,000 milliliters, so 1,000 milliliters are left. So, that is 1 liter. Also, convert to one unit before subtracting to avoid mixing units.

How do I compare 3 minutes and 170 seconds?

Change 3 minutes to seconds by multiplying by 60, which gives 180 seconds. Since 180 is greater than 170, 3 minutes is greater than 170 seconds. Converting to the smaller unit lets you compare whole numbers directly.

What if my conversion is right but I forgot the units?

Many teachers deduct a point because a number without a unit does not fully answer the question. Always write the unit with the number, such as 6,000 meters. The key shows each unit so you can compare.
