This 5th grade comparing decimals worksheet covers reading, comparing and rounding decimals (Common Core 5.NBT.A.3, 5.NBT.A.4), with a free PDF to print.

Key takeaway: This worksheet helps fifth grade students practice reading, writing, comparing, ordering, and rounding decimals to the thousandths place.

  • Topic: Reading, Comparing and Rounding Decimals (5th grade)
  • Content: 20 worksheet problems, from easy to challenging
  • Standards: 5.NBT.A.3, 5.NBT.A.4
  • Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
  • Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white

This worksheet helps fifth grade students practice reading, writing, comparing, ordering, and rounding decimals to the thousandths place. Also, charts, bars, and real situations such as races, gas prices, and rainfall show where these skills appear.

There are 20 problems. The first six write decimals in word form, standard form, and expanded form, and the next four compare and order decimals. Then, four problems round to each place, one finds which numbers round to a target, and the last five are word problems about a race, gas, rain, a pumpkin, and bags of flour. Also, allow about 35 minutes.

These 20 problems practice reading, writing, comparing and rounding decimals to the thousandths (Common Core 5.NBT.A.3 and 5.NBT.A.4). You will use word form, standard form and expanded form, compare with the symbols <, > and =, and round to the nearest whole number, tenth, hundredth and thousandth.

The last six problems are word problems about sports, money and weights. Line up the places before you compare.

  1. five and twelve hundredths
  2. three hundred four thousandths
  3. eight tenths
  4. twenty-one and six thousandths

3 – Value of a digit

Then, the chart shows 4.371. Write the place and the value of the digit 7. Then find the value of the 5 in 8.005.

Also, write 5.126 in expanded form using decimals.

6 – Expanded form to standard form

First, write each number in standard form.

  1. \(4\times10+2\times1+3\times\frac{1}{10}+6\times\frac{1}{1000}\)
  2. \(9\times1+7\times0.01\)

7 – Compare with symbols

Next, write <, > or = in each blank. The bars show the first pair.

0.450.5
Bars for 0.45 and 0.5.

8 – Compare more decimals

Then, write <, > or = to compare.

  1. \(6.071 \quad ? \quad 6.07\)
  2. \(0.9 \quad ? \quad 0.09\)
  3. \(5.55 \quad ? \quad 5.505\)

Worksheet problem 9 and after

9 – Order decimals

Now, order from least to greatest: \(0.62, 0.6, 0.062, 0.602, 0.26\).

0.00.10.20.30.40.50.60.7
Use the line to help.

  3. \(7.9996\)

14 – Which round to 4.3?

Now, circle every number that rounds to 4.3 when rounded to the nearest tenth: \(4.25, 4.34, 4.26, 4.35, 4.29\).

4.204.254.304.354.40
The number line from 4.20 to 4.40.

15 – 60-yard dash

Also, in Little League tryouts, Jamal runs the 60-yard dash in 8.37 seconds. Liam runs it in 8.4 seconds. Who is faster? Explain.

Key facts behind this 5th grade comparing decimals worksheet

Key facts
  • The places right of the decimal point are tenths, hundredths and thousandths.
  • Expanded form shows each digit times its place value, such as 4 × 1/10.
  • To compare decimals, compare digits from left to right, one place at a time.
  • Adding zeros to the end of a decimal does not change its value: 0.3 = 0.30.
  • Round up when the next digit is 5 or more; keep the digit when it is 4 or less.

Common mistakes with this 5th grade comparing decimals worksheet

  • Students say a decimal with a longer tail is greater. Rewrite both with the same number of places, then compare from the left.
  • Students round a halfway digit down. A digit of 5 rounds up, so 4.65 rounds to 4.7 at the nearest tenth.
  • Students drop the zero when a carry makes a rounded decimal end in zero. Also, keep the zero to show the rounding place.
  • Students explain a comparison by the size of the digits only. Instead, name the place that decides, such as tenths.

Tips before you start the worksheet problems

  • Write every decimal in a place value chart. Finally, the chart shows the value of each digit. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.
  • Add zeros before comparing so every decimal has the same length. Also, this avoids the longer is larger trap.
  • Teachers can ask students to explain one rounding problem with a number line. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.

5th grade comparing decimals worksheet: frequently asked questions

How do you write a number from its word form?

Write the whole number part, place the decimal point where you hear the word and, then write the digits so the last digit sits in the named place. So, two and fifteen thousandths is 2.015, with 5 in the thousandths place.

How do you tell which numbers round to a target tenth?

Find the range from half a tenth below to just under half a tenth above. Also, numbers from 6.15 up to 6.249 round to 6.2. The lower end rounds up, and the upper end rounds down.

How do you round a price to the nearest cent and to the nearest dollar?

Look at the thousandths digit for cents and the tenths digit for dollars. A price of 2.749 rounds to 2.75 at the nearest cent, and to 3 at the nearest dollar. Always start from the original number.
