  • Topic: Graphing on the Coordinate Plane (5th grade)
  • Content: 20 worksheet problems, from easy to challenging
  • Standards: 5.G.A.1, 5.G.A.2
  • Answers: On a separate page, so you can try every worksheet problem first
  • Format: Free printable PDF, US Letter, black and white

This worksheet helps fifth grade students practice reading and plotting ordered pairs, finding distances on grid lines, and interpreting graphs of real data. Also, maps, tables, and graphs show how the coordinate plane describes everyday situations.

There are 20 problems. The first six name coordinates, plot points, and describe moves from a point. The next six find distances, plot shapes, compare points, and read a map. Then, the last eight turn tables into ordered pairs and interpret graphs about cookies, dog walking, plants, a road trip, lemonade, a treasure map, a walk to school, and saving money. Also, allow about 35 minutes.

This worksheet has 20 problems on the coordinate plane (5.G.A.1 and 5.G.A.2). You will name and plot points in the first quadrant, find distances along grid lines, and read graphs of real situations.

The problems begin with ordered pairs and move to maps, tables and graphs with a scale. The last six are word problems. Always give the x-coordinate first and label axes with units.

Key facts behind this 5th grade coordinate plane worksheet

Key facts
  • The x-axis is horizontal and the y-axis is vertical; they meet at the origin (0, 0).
  • Next, an ordered pair (x, y) gives the move right first, then up.
  • (2, 5) and (5, 2) are two different points.
  • Points with the same x-coordinate or the same y-coordinate lie on a straight line, so subtract to find the distance.
  • Axis labels explain what each coordinate means in a real-world graph.

Common mistakes with this 5th grade coordinate plane worksheet

  • Students treat (6, 1) and (1, 6) as the same point. They are different points, because the order of the coordinates matters.
  • Students find a distance by subtracting the wrong coordinates. Also, on a horizontal line, subtract the x-coordinates, and on a vertical line, subtract the y-coordinates.
  • Students write ordered pairs as (cookies, packs) when the table lists packs first. Instead, follow the order the question gives.
  • Students stop after one leg of a map trip. Also, add the legs to get the total number of blocks.

Tips before you start the worksheet problems

  • Use grid paper and a sharp pencil. Also, neat points make it easier to read coordinates. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.
  • Check each plotted point by rereading the pair and retracing the path from the origin. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.
  • Teachers can ask students to swap graphs and name each other’s points. Repeat this habit on every problem for the best results.

5th grade coordinate plane worksheet: frequently asked questions

How do you find the distance between two points on a vertical line?

The x-coordinates match, so subtract the y-coordinates. So, for (2, 3) and (2, 10), subtract 10 minus 3. The distance is 7 units. You can also count the spaces on the grid.

How do you turn a table into ordered pairs?

Pair each input with its output in the order the headings give. If the table shows hours and dollars, write (hours, dollars). Then plot each pair on the grid and look for a pattern.

How do you describe a move on a grid?

Say how many units right and how many up, in that order. A move from (1, 1) of 3 right and 2 up ends at (4, 3). Write the final point as an ordered pair.
