Grade 3 · Common Core State Standards: 3.OA.A.1, 3.OA.A.3
Multiplication meaning answers: exercises 1 to 10
Exercise 1 – Groups in a product
The first factor is the number of groups and the second is the size of each group. So \(8 \times 3\) means 8 groups of 3. Answer: 8 groups, 3 in each group.
Exercise 2 – Count the groups
There are 3 boxes with 5 dots in each box. Equation: \(3 \times 5 = 15\). Check by adding: \(5 + 5 + 5 = 15\). Answer: 15 dots.
Each box holds 5, and 3 boxes hold 15.
Exercise 3 – Repeated addition
\(7 \times 3\) is 7 groups of 3, so add 3 seven times: \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 21\). Answer: 21.
Exercise 4 – Read the array
Count 5 rows with 6 dots in each row. Equation: \(5 \times 6 = 30\). Answer: 30 dots.
Exercise 5 – Meaning of each factor
The 9 is the number of groups. The 4 is the number in each group. The 36 is the product, the total in all. Answer: 9 groups of 4 make 36.
Exercise 6 – Jumps on a number line
There are 4 jumps of 5. Equation: \(4 \times 5 = 20\). Count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20. Answer: 20 feet.
The rabbit lands on 20.
Exercise 7 – Shelves of books
6 shelves with 5 books on each shelf: \(6 \times 5 = 30\). Answer: 30 books.
7 groups of $3: \(7 \times 3 = 21\). Answer: \(\$21\).
Exercises 11 and up
Exercise 11 – Unknown product
\(9 \times 3\) means 9 groups of 3. Count by 3s nine times: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27. Answer: \(n = 27\).
Exercise 12 – Repeated addition check
\(5 \times 4\) is 5 groups of 4, so there must be five 4s. Mei added only four 4s, and \(4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16\). The correct sum is \(4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20\). Answer: No, she is not correct.
Exercise 13 – Tape diagram of sticker books
There are 6 equal parts of 7: \(6 \times 7 = 42\). Answer: 42.
The total is 42.
Exercise 14 – Fix the equation
3 groups of 6 need three 6s: \(6 + 6 + 6 = 18\). Answer: \(3 \times 6 = 18\).
A letter or symbol can stand for the unknown product, as in 5 × 8 = n.
