This graphs practice worksheet for 3rd Grade covers scaled graphs and line plots (Common Core 3.MD.B.3, 3.MD.B.4), with a free PDF to print.
These 20 problems practice reading and comparing scaled picture graphs and bar graphs, measuring lengths to the half inch and fourth inch, and reading line plots (3.MD.B.3 and 3.MD.B.4).
Start with the key or the scale, then read the values. The last six problems ask for more than one step, so write each step.

Graphs practice worksheet: exercises 1 to 10
Exercise 1 – Read the picture graph
Each star stands for 4 books. How many books did the Blue team read?
Graph for Problem 1.
Exercise 2 – Stars for a total
In a picture graph, each star stands for 5 students. How many stars show 35 students? How many show 25 students?
Exercise 3 – Read the bar graph
How many students chose bananas?
Graph for Problem 3.
Exercise 4 – How many more pages
How many more books were returned on Thursday than on Monday?
Graph for Problem 4.
Exercise 5 – Halfway on the scale
The scale on a bar graph counts by 10: 0, 10, 20, 30. A bar ends halfway between 20 and 30. What number does the bar show?
Exercise 6 – Measure the crayon
Write the length of the crayon to the nearest fourth of an inch.
Ruler for Problem 6.
Exercise 7 – Measure the pencil
The pencil starts at 0. Where does its tip end? Write the length in inches.
Ruler for Problem 7.
Exercise 8 – Count the marks
A ribbon is \(2\frac{1}{4}\) inches long. How many fourth-inch marks is that from 0 on a ruler?
Exercise 9 – Read the line plot
How many leaves are 2 inches long?
Line plot for Problem 9.
Exercise 10 – Longer than the mark
How many ribbon pieces are longer than \(1\frac{1}{2}\) inches?
Line plot for Problem 10.
Exercises 11 and up
Exercise 11 – Build a line plot
Pedro measures 8 shells in inches: \(1\frac{1}{4}\), \(1\frac{1}{2}\), \(1\frac{1}{4}\), \(2\), \(1\frac{3}{4}\), \(1\frac{1}{4}\), \(2\), \(1\frac{1}{2}\). He makes a line plot. How many Xs go above \(1\frac{1}{4}\)?
Exercise 12 – Picture graph with halves
Each star stands for 10 cans. How many more cans did Room 3 collect than Room 2? How many cans did all four rooms collect?
Graph for Problem 12.
Exercise 13 – Cups of lemonade
How many cups were sold on Saturday and Sunday together? How many fewer cups were sold on Monday than on Saturday?
Graph for Problem 13.
Exercise 14 – Sports votes
Each star in a picture graph stands for 4 students. Swimming has 7 stars and hiking has 4 stars. How many more students chose swimming?
Exercise 15 – Street fair
A bar graph scale counts by 10. The Maple Street bar ends halfway between 30 and 40. The Oak Street bar ends at 60. How many more people are on Oak Street?
Exercise 16 – Book fair
Each star stands for 8 books and a half star stands for 4. Room A has 3 whole stars and a half star. Room B has 5 whole stars. How many books do the two rooms have in all?
Exercise 17 – Pencil lengths
A line plot shows 3 pencils at 4 inches, 5 pencils at \(4\frac{1}{2}\) inches, and 2 pencils at 5 inches. How many pencils were measured? How many pencils are longer than 4 inches?
Exercise 18 – Raffle tickets
A bar graph has a scale that counts by 5. Sam sold 35 tickets, Tia sold 20, and Uma sold 30. How many tickets did the three students sell? How many more did Tia and Uma sell together than Sam?
Exercise 19 – Reading minutes
A bar graph has a scale that counts by 2. Maya’s bar reaches 14 books and Leo’s bar reaches 8 books. How many books did they read together? How many more did Maya read?
Exercise 20 – Pizza slices
Each star stands for 2 slices and a half star stands for 1 slice. On Tuesday the picture graph shows 6 whole stars and 1 half star. On Wednesday it shows 9 whole stars. How many more slices were eaten on Wednesday?
Key facts behind this graphs practice worksheet
Key facts
The key tells what one symbol is worth; a half symbol is worth half.
On a bar graph, read the scale before reading a bar.
A bar halfway between two lines is halfway between their values.
A ruler is marked in inches, halves, and fourths.
On a line plot, each X is one measurement.
