2nd Grade Arrays and Equal Groups Test Solutions and Scoring (PDF)

This arrays test answers for 2nd Grade covers arrays and equal groups (Common Core 2.OA.C.4), with a free PDF to print.

This answer key lists each solution and how the points are awarded. Give partial credit when a student writes the correct equal addends but makes a small addition slip. Total: 20 points.

Arrays test answers: worked solutions
Question 1 – Rows and columns [2 pts]
5 rows and 3 columns.
Scoring: 1 point for the rows, 1 point for the columns.
Question 2 – Add the rows [2 pts]
\(3 + 3 + 3 = 9\)
Total: 9
Scoring: 1 point for three equal addends, 1 point for the correct total.
Question 3 – Add the columns [2 pts]
\(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12\)
Total: 12
Scoring: 1 point for four addends of 3, 1 point for the correct total.
Question 4 – Egg cartons [2 pts]
\(4 + 4 = 8\)
8 eggs
Scoring: 1 point for the sentence, 1 point for the total.
Question 5 – Boxes of pencils [2 pts]
\(5 + 5 + 5 = 15\)
15 pencils
Scoring: 1 point for the sentence, 1 point for the total.
Question 6 – Rows or columns [2 pts]
Rows: \(5 + 5 + 5 = 15\)
Columns: \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15\)
Scoring: 1 point for each correct sentence.
Question 7 – Missing row size [2 pts]
\(5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25\), so each row has 5 stickers.
Scoring: 1 point for a correct method such as repeated addition, 1 point for the answer.
Question 8 – Chairs at a concert [3 pts]
- \(5 + 5 + 5 = 15\). 15 chairs.
- There are 5 rows: \(5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25\). 25 chairs.
Scoring: (a) 1 point. (b) 1 point for using 5 rows or adding 15 and 10, 1 point for the correct total.
Question 9 – Compare two arrays [3 pts]
- A: \(4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16\) B: \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15\)
- Array A has 1 more: 16 is greater than 15.
Scoring: (a) 1 point for each array. (b) 1 point for naming Array A.

Key facts behind this arrays test answers
- Rows go across and columns go up and down.
- Repeated addition adds the same number again and again: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
- Grade 2 arrays have up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns.
- Adding the rows or adding the columns gives the same total.
- Equal groups, such as 4 bags of 5, can be added the same way.
